Lower Merion High School Combined Achievement Data

Step 5 Data Notes and Explanations

•In 2012 the state of Pennsylvania switched from the Pennsylvania State Standardized Assessment (PSSA) to the Keystone Exams. That switch accounts for some of the misaligned data from 2011 to 2012 and the areas included here are the areas our state requires standardized testing for.

•Science -- The percentage of all students above Proficiency has increased each year in biology. This past year almost 93% of our students tested proficient and above on the biology Keystone compared to the state average, which is just above 40%.

•Literature -- LMHS administers the Literature exam to students in 10thgrade at the end of course. Most schools across PA administer the test in 11thgrade giving one more year of English/Literature to students. LMHS students in 10thgrade consistently out perform the students’ testing statewide in 11thgrade.

  • Mathematics -- LMSD administers the Algebra I Keystone to students in 8thgrade. Most high school students who are administered this exam are students who are re-taking the exam or students coming from another District who have not yet been tested. In 2011-12 the state of Pennsylvania switched from the PSSA to the Keystone. For AYP purposes the state had schools use the Keystone exam and kids who had not taken Algebra one for two or three years had to take this exam. 2014-15 will be the first year where mostly students who are taking the course are taking the exam.
  • Across all content areas, LMHS outperformed the state average and the percentage of our students achieving proficient and advanced hasremained high and evenincreased. Both our content and interdisciplinary PLC’s are a contributing factor to this success.
