Reading Groups and school based study / creating a sequel

Read one of the books, “The Phantom of Manhattan” by Frederick Forsyth or “The Phantom of the Opera” by Gaston Leroux, and have a discussion about the next chapter in the lives of the participants. Perhaps write another chapter in the ongoing love story.

Writing letters

In Love Never Dies, Christine is lured to New York because of a letter from a famous composer; have students learn the style of writing a formal letter, and compose a letter to invite a famous singer of the day to their school for a special concert.

Master Classes

The company of Love Never Dies is full of classically-trained singers and instrumental musicians; perhaps they can lead master classes in vocal, instrumental and conducting.

Technical Theater

Perhaps technical theater students can take a tour backstage and speak with stage manager and other traveling crew about the inner workings of a massive show like Love Never Dies.

Culture

The Phantom moves to another country and is forced to assimilate into the culture to try and fit in and remain unnoticed. Perhaps students can write an essay about moving to another culture or another country.

Sampling music

In the score of Love Never Dies, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber uses some of the musical themes from The Phantom of the Opera. Listen to the score and pick out some of the musical lines that are familiar. Students can compare this with popular music of today that ‘samples’ older songs or musical themes and re-invents them.

Coney Island in 1907 – carnival culture

Who doesn’t want to run away with the circus? Students can study the carnival show and specifically Coney Island at the turn of the century. What would it be like to run away from the circus, and what are the equivalents in today’s society?

Piano lessons for kids

Christine and Raoul’s son Gustav plays the piano and picks out The Phantom’s melody on the piano in Love Never Dies. What a great start to music education for young people to be exposed to the piano. Perhaps a classroom can learn some of the basics of the piano from a visiting musician, or piano students can tour the orchestra pit and meet some of the musicians in the touring company.
