Broken Hip Fatal To Mrs. Berndt, 82

Bear Creek—Funeral services were held Monday from the Lutheran church at Embarrass for Mrs. Louise Berndt, 82, who died Saturday, July 1. In St. Elizabeth hospital, Appleton. The Rev. Mr Schilling was is charge. Interment was made in the Embarrass Lutheran cemetery.

Mrs. Berndt broke her hip in a fall at the home of Mr. Villnow here several weeks ago, where she was employed as a housekeeper. She was one of the first settlers in the village of Embarrass.

Decedent was born in Germany Dec.24, 1840. She was married about 50 years ago to Gustave (AKA Charles) Berndt and the couple located at Clintonville after coming to America. They moved to Embarrass shortly afterward, where they made their home permanently.

Mrs. Berndt is survived by an adoptive son, Gustave Berndt, Embarrass; Four brothers, Frank Ehlert, Milwaukee; August Ehlert, Clintonville, Herman Ehlert, Embarrass; William Ehlert, Shawano.

Louise and her husband Charles (referred to in obit as Gustave) are buried at Zion Cemetery Embarrass.

Embarrass-Charles Gustav Berndt, was born, January 30, 1848in Freinwalde, Germany. He came to this country in his youth and in 1872 was married to Louise Ehlert.

Embarrass has been his home for forty years. He died April 7th at the age of sixty-five years. He left one brother in Germany, and a widow and son in Embarrass. The funeral was held last Thursday, Rev. Schilling officiating. The interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery.

OLD GERMAN IS DEAD
Last week Thursday the funeral of HERMAN Ehlert was held in the Luth. church in Embarrass. It was a large funeral . On Sunday, Dec. 2nd he died from a fall at his home. The deceased was born near Stettin in Germany on 14 December 1850. He grew to manhood there and was married in 1873 to Wilimina Kramer. In 1876 he came with his family to America. For 6 years he lived in Neenah. In 1882 he came with his family to Embarrass where they settled on a farm. He lived there for 6 years and then moved to the village of Embarrass where he lived his last years. Herr Ehlert is survived by his wife & children. August, Herman and Robert Ehlert of Embarrass and Mrs Arnold (EMMA)Timm from Shawano. He is also survived by 3 brothers in this country. Wilhelm in Shawano, Frank in Milwaukee and August in Clintonville. Also 3 brothers in Germany

Pioneer Citizen of Clintonville Buried Wednesday

Clintonville—August Ehlert 50, one of the eldest citizens in this community, died at his home here Sunday.

He came to America , in 1882, from Stettin Pomerania, Germany where he had born June 10, 1848, and took up his residence on a piece of land in the town of Larrabee, 2 miles from this city where he lived for 7 years. During these early days, while he was trying to carve a farm out of the wilderness, he was employed by the Northwestern Railroad company, hauling ties, telegraph poles and general supplies.

After coming to this city he served as sexton of the cemetery for twenty years, a position he held until this work was taken over by the Graceland Cemetery Association, 6 years ago.

His wife, whom he married on Germany on August 2, 1877, was Miss Augusta Nix. To this union six children were born, two dying in infancy, and one son Frank, who died in 1904 at the age of 21. The survivors are the widow, two daughters. Mrs. Charles Bowers (Martha) Marion, Mrs Arthur Larson (Antoinette AKA Tory) of Chicago and a son Rudolph Ehlert, Marion, and nine grandchildren.

Four brothers also survive. William of Shawano, Frank of Milwaukee, and Christian and Fred, in Germany.

He was a member of the Baptist Church at Wausau. Last August Mr. and Mrs. Ehlert celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in this city. Just before Easter this year he suffered a slight stroke, and had been confined to his bed since that time. The funeral was held at the Ehlert home on Wednesday afternoon at 2o’clock conducted by the Rev C.J Eichoff of Black Creek.

Pneumonia Takes Mrs. Wm Ehlert

Mrs. William Ehlert, a well known mother of Shawano, died at her home at 121 Smalley Street at eleven o’clock Sunday morning, at the age of sixty-eight years. When had been ill with pneumonia for nine days and at the crisis was unable to throw it off.

Her maiden name was Louise Braatz. She was born in Pommern Germany, November 18th. 1863 daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Braatz. (Sister Albertine Braatz Raddant married to Carl Raddant preceded her in death)

When she was only three, she came with her parents to America directly to a farm in Belle Plaine. She and William Ehlert were married in 1879 (Actually Sept 10 1880) and to them twelve children were born, six girls and six boys. Eleven of these children are still living to bless her memory. Ella Ehlert Schmidt died in 1918 at the time of the great flu epidemic.

The Ehlert farm was located down on the Wolf River, on the Hammond road, between three and four miles down the river. They lived in that farm thirty-seven years and the children were all born there. When Mr. Ehlert went to that farm fifty-two years ago, there were seven acres cleared. There were only three of four houses in Shawano. The Upham store across from the Northwestern only business place. Mr. Ehlert helped to lay the Northwestern tracks, the original road from Neenah to Clintonville, and afterwards he helped build the Oconto branch.

Through these early years of contentment and hard work the farm was built up to one of the good farms of the community. The children living are Mrs. Wm. Stubbe (Augusta)and Mrs. Paul Stubbe (Minnie) Milwaukee. Mrs. Otto Timm, (Liza) ,Stefenson, Michigan: John Ehlert , Milwaukee; Arthur, Theodore, and George, Shawano; Richard, Rochester, Minnesota; William on a farm near Caroline; and Mrs. Arnold Krueger, (Sara), Clintonville; Mrs. Chas (Carl) Weber (Ester).

Her brothers are August Braatz of Ashland and Albert Braatz of Shawano. She leaves twenty-three grandchildren and one great grand child.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the Peace Church, Rev. Mr. Brauer, presiding. The six sons were pall-bearers.

In her death this community loses a good Christian woman a mother of a good family and a greatly respected citizen.

William Ehlert Sr. 85 died at 1:30 this morning at the home of his daughter Mrs. Carl Weber, Following an illness of one year and six months.
He had spend most of his life in this community, on a farm in the town of Waukechon for a number of years, 10 years as a watchman at the papermill, and three years employed at the Iwen box factory.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon from the home at 1:30 p.m. to St James Luthern Church at 2 p.m. in charge of the Rev. Wm. Scrhoth. The body will be taken from the Schweers funeral home to the residence Sunday afternoon where it will remain until the hour of the funeral.
Mr. Ehlert was born in Germany on January 9, 1856 and came to this country in 1873 (actually 1876)He was married to Elizabeth (Louisa) Braatz in 1878 (actually 1880)
Survivors include 10 children Mrs. Wlliam Stubbe Milwaukee; Mrs Henry Foley, Daggett Mich, John and Richard of Milwaukee, Arthur and George of Gresham, Ted of Shawano , Mrs Carl Weber of Shawano and Mrs Arnold Krueger of Fond du Lac.
