DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., founded in 1913, is a private non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. A sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately African American college educated women, the Sorority currently has over 900 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea. The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization's Five Point Thrust of:

  • Economic Development
  • Educational Development
  • International Awareness and Involvement
  • Physical and Mental Health
  • Political Awareness and Involvement

The Loudoun County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated,will award scholarships to African American female students who demonstrate a high degree of scholarship, leadership, and community service. Applicants must have a 3.0 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale. The applicant must be a resident of Loudoun County, Virginia and a United States citizen.

The completed application must be postmarked no later than February 10, 2012 and mailed to:

A. RESUME

  1. Please include a high school resume that demonstrates your involvement in school clubs, employment, community service activities or athletics. Highlight leadership roles and responsibilities.
  2. Also, attach a one page double-spaced description of a community service project in which you participated during the past year.
  3. Please attach a current photo to your application.

B. ESSAY

Include in the application a two-page essay onthe following topic. The essay must be doubled spaced using a 12-point font.

  1. In your opinion, what is the greatest challenge that your generation will face? What ideas do you have for dealing with this issue?

C. RECOMMENDATIONS:

Two letters of recommendations must accompany the application in a sealed envelope with the author’s signature across the seal. The lettersmust be on official letterhead and may be from a teacher, employer, school counselor, principal, or vice principal. A relative may not write the letter.

D. TRANSCRIPT:

Please includein the application an official transcript. Submit the transcript in a sealed envelope with the signature of the school official across the envelope seal. The guidance counselor or career center specialist can assist you with this requirement.
