OBITS

George Kennedy (Installation) passed away Friday, July 15th.

A delightful note sent to us by a dear friend of George Kennedy.

This lovely lady has asked to be put on our newsletter mailing list.

Thank you Tatiana for the love and special care you gave to our

beloved George.

George Kennedy passed away peacefully the evening of

July 15, 2005, at Hollenbeck Home. He was 103-1/3 years old.

The signs of age had begun to mark his body, but they had not

touched his mind. He was still able to answer Jeopardy questions,

especially about English history.

Mr. Kennedy had been retired from what had been Western Electric

longer than most people work in a lifetime and was a longtime

member of Los Compañeros Telephone Pioneers. His love of

classical music led him to participate in the choir at the First

Congregational Church of Los Angeles for many years, where he

Also served as Librarian. Fine food, good wine and friends were

Important to him. He was always impeccable, a true gentleman.

He is survived by two nieces and many devoted friends, such as

Dan & Ana Maria Di Nardo, who faithfully visited daily.

We all loved him and will miss him deeply. Thankfully, fond memories

Endure.

Tatiana Tailor

Peter A. Anderson (Installation) died June 20th.

Mary Jackson, Los Amigos Chapter President, Passed away in July.

Our sincerest sympathies to the families.

MEMBER APPRECIATION

Member Appreciation Day was celebrated at our July Luncheon/meeting. Certificates were handed out to those who have helped with the Club and assisted Eddie King, as President, during the past year. He thanked every member for their participation in all that we try to do for others.

ITEMS DONATED

Delivery was made to Rio Hondo Temporary Home in June be the Kings. Can goods, fresh meat, and fresh potatoes are always appreciated by the Home. Thank you to those of you who have been faithfully bringing in canned goods!!! DON’T FORGET TO BRING IN AT LEAST ONE CAN OF FOOD TO THE NEXT MEETING.

A charming, gracious lady, Maria Puente-Porras, Attorney At Law joined us at our June Luncheon to introduce herself and to state the goal of her seven siblings is to do the very best at teaching their children on ‘giving’ to others. She expressed their desire to “adopt” our club. This lovely family has 23 children among the 8 siblings and wants to help us in any way they can. Currently they hold a clipping session on Monday nights to cut out product coupons. The family does special giving activities at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but they want to do more throughout the year. What a great family!!!

This great family responded to Margaret Meadows request for volunteers to make Cool Ties by presenting to the club 70 of them completed!!! Which enabled us to give to the New Outlook Telecom Pioneers project “Families Serving The Military” a total of 102 Cool Ties who in turn sends them in the Care Packages to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Thank you Maria for contributing to this worthy project. Thank you to Margaret Meadows for requesting help from volunteers for this project and everyone who participated!!! (This has been corrected)

DATES TO REMEMBER:

Monday, Sept. 5 Labor Day

Sunday, Sept. 11 Grandparent’s Day

CHRISTMAS IN JULY

Our Christmas in July has been postponed due to the Warren Chester’s involvement and total devotion to his beloved Jinny the last several months of her life here on earth.

IDEALS

OMELETS IN A BAG PARTY (From Rene Allen)

Have your guests use a permanent marker to write their name on a quart size freezer bag. Crack two large or extra-large eggs into the bag (more than two will not work) shake and combine them. Put out a variety of ingredients such as cheeses, ham, onion, green pepper, tomato, has browns, salsa, etc. Have the guests add the prepared ingredients of their choice to the bag and shake. Make sure to get the air out of the bag and zip it up. Place the bags into rolling –boiling water for exactly 13 minutes. You can usually cook 6-8 omelets in the large pot. For more, make another pot of boiling water. Open the bags and the omelet will roll out easily. Be prepared for everyone to be amazed. This is very nice to serve with fresh fruit and a coffee cake. It’s a great conversation piece and everyone gets involved in the process. It’s easy, convenient and delicious.

E-RUMORS

The following is an E-Rumor with accompanying facts sent to Eddie King: “After the terrorist bombings in London in July 2005, an ambulance service

started a campaign to encourage you to put an “ICE” entry into your cell phone that contains the names & numbers of people to be contacted in case you are in an emergency.”

The campaign is true, although it was not prompted by the London terrorist bombings. A paramedic based in Cambridge, England started it in April 2005. His name is Bob Brotchie and he is a clinical team leader for the East Anglican Ambulance NHS Trust. He said he got tired of trying to figure out whom to contact when dealing with shocked or injured patients who can’t give the information themselves.

The campaign encourages people to put an entry in their cell phones and other portable address devices under the name of “ICE” (In Case Of Emergency). Emergency personnel can quickly check the cell phone for the “ICE” entry and reach whoever’s name and contact information is there. It also gives the cell phone owner the opportunity to choose who will be contacted during an emergency.

Following the disaster in London, the ambulance service launched a national “ICE” campaign. The idea is that you store the word “ICE” in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the name contacted. In an emergency situation ambulance and hospitals staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It’s so simple that everyone can do it. It really could save your life, or put a loved one’s mind at ease. For more than one contact name, simply ID them by number such as ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 and so on.

QUOTE OF WISDOM

Quote of wisdom form “For Achievers Only” You are in charge of your own attitude—whatever others do or circumstances you face. The only person you can control is yourself. Worry more about your attitude than you aptitude or lineage.

REMINDER FROM PAC FINANCIAL ASSOCIATES

“Please remind all of your Pioneer leaders who receive checks on behalf of their Council, Club or Chapter “DO NOT DEPOSIT ANY CHECKS FROM YELLOW PAGES. THIS IS A SCAM”.

In this scam, Yellow Pages will send a ‘rebate check’ to the organization for a few dollars. The check is from YP.COM Internet Yellow Pages. By depositing the check (and not reading the fine print) your organization is authorizing them to do online advertising for you. This also subjects you to a monthly charge around $25.00 each month, which is automatically deducted from your account. Once you deposit the check, they have access to your checking account number and they prepare a draft to send to your bank each month to debit your account without your knowledge.

This appears to be a legitimate business, but it is using devious ways of obtaining your money. The checks are for very minimal amounts, but PLEASE DO NOT deposit the checks because there is no reason that the Chapters would want to advertise with online yellow pages. We have our own Telecom Pioneers website and most of the Chapters have their own Chapter Pioneer website.

A SURPRISE 90TH BIRTHDAY PARTY

A surprise 90th birthday party was enjoyed by the friends and family of Lydia Armenta. The party was held in her honor August 6th, and yes it was a big surprise to her. Her birthday is October 27th, but we just couldn’t wait to celebrate. Eddie and Dolores have been friends of Lydia for over 50 years! Happy early birthday Lydia!!!
