Parent Meet & Greet was held from 6:00pm to 6:45pm in the foyer of the auditorium. Parents introduced themselves to one another over light snacks.

OPEN DISCUSSION

VinceHolmes welcomed everyone and spoke briefly on 20 week grades. He reminded everyone that these grades are now permanent. A big Thank You was given to all parents who brought food for the finals breakfast. He then advised that the SAT prep classes have begun at LACES and that the test date is March 13. Everyone in the class should be reminded that they have to sign up online for the test. Lastly, as a reminder the ACT test date is scheduled for April 10. Please consider taking both.

REMARKS

Co-Chair PamBaker gave introductory remarks covering meeting format and schedule. She also dismissed students into break-out sessions with guests speakers: Ms. Gay Havard, Crystal Crawford, Esq., Dr. Tyrone Howard, Professor at UCLA, and Rakeen Hall, Assistant Director of Admission USC. Students returned to the general meeting after hearing from the speakers.

PRESENTATION

VinceHolmes discussed history of the BPO and its founder JohnGalloway along with DeanaGalloway and PamBaker. He also distributed a BPO Gide which outlines the objectives of the organization. He also offered parent tips for a successful school year: maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average, stay involved with your students, attend school functions including the “Coffee Talk,” restrict television and video games during the school week.

Vince made note of important upcoming dates: September 29—Senior Parent Meeting Night; October 7—Back to School Night; October 16—U House Festival; October 13—PSAT and October 14—College Fair.

PRESENTATION

Ms.Bakewell, College Counselor and AP Coordinator gave an overview of her efforts to assist students with college readiness and distributed a “Key Events” calendar. She highlighted special dates including “College Awareness Week—“October 11 through October 15th; and the College Fair October 14.

TREASURER REPORT

JennieceJohnson gave an update on the John Galloway Scholarship and reported as well as a preliminary balance status. More information will be available at the next meeting.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dr.Kim introduced MaggieScott, Co-President of Friends of LACES. She went on to discuss student performance ratings with standardized tests and reported that LACES has improved its ranking considerably with AP Testing.

She indicated that she was aware of the issues with the various bus stop changes and encouraged parents to call the LAUSD Transportation Office with specific concerns.

PRESENTATION TO GUEST SPEAKERS

Guest speakers were called to the front of the auditorium and presented with plaques as a show of appreciation.

INTRODUCTION OF STUDENT LEADERS

JanaeOsby (BSU President), HaleyShinn (Vice President), RosauraWardsworth (BSU Co-President), BernadetteAdjigheji (BSU Co-President) who introduced and acknowledged AP students and 3.0PLUS GPA certificate honorees. Lastly they introduced the Big Brother, Big Sister pairing program. Each pairing is supposed to check on one another throughout the year to make sure homework is being turned in and that they are studying for tests.
