Algebra 1A Course Syllabus

Description: Algebra 1A is the second part of a first year course in college preparatory mathematics. The purpose of this course is to serve as the vehicle by which students make the transition from arithmetic to symbolic mathematical reasoning. It is an opportunity for students to extend and practice logical reasoning in the context of understanding, writing, solving, and graphing problems involving linear and quadratic equations (including systems of two linear equations in two unknowns).

In this course, students are expected to demonstrate their ability to extend specific problems andconditions to general assertions about mathematical situations. Additionally, you are expected to justify steps in an algebraic procedure and check algebraic arguments for validity (i.e. according to the rules about how numbers and variables work).

Textbook: Algebra 1: Concepts, Skills, and Problem Solving. Each student will have a textbook to use at home for homework practice.

Grading Policy:

All grading is determined on a 4 point rubric: This means partial credit is always possible so always show your work!

4 points: Excellent. Student work is complete and mastery is clearly demonstrated

3 points: Good. Student work is mostly complete and proficiency is clearly demonstrated

2 points: Marginal. Student work is mostly incomplete and basic understanding of concepts is not demonstrated.

1 point: Unsatisfactory. Student does little or no work and

  • Tests and Quizzes 40%
  • Classwork/group work 20%

Homework Policy:

Homework will be assigned4 times a week Monday through Thursday! You should do it on the day it is given in order to stay up to date. However, I will not check it until the end of the week. Doing your homework is a key to your success in the class. Tests and quizzes will be based on this homework that you do on a daily basis, so get it done and turn it in on time!

Testing Policy: Tests and Quizzes will be given once a week, usually on Thursdays. If you are absent on that day, it is YOUR responsibility to schedule a time to make up the exam ASAP (within 3 school days). If you do not, you will receive a zero for the exam you missed.

Attendance Policy: Good attendance is crucial to your success in this class. Students should not accumulate more than 10 absences. Doing so may result in a failing grade regardless of classroom performance.

Tardies: It is important to come to class on time. Being late not only makes you missclasswork, it also interrupts and distracts the class. Each month you have one tardy with no consequences. If you are tardy more than 2 times in a month, you will receive detention (10 minutes) after school and a call home. If you continue to be late there will be a parent conference to resolve the problem in addition to the detention each time you are tardy more than once a month.

RestroomPolicy: Passes to the restroom are given only in the case of an emergency. Use your time between classes wisely.

Other Policies:You may get up to sharpen your pencil, throw away garbage but there may only be one person standing at a time! Before you stand up, look around and double check that no other student is up and out of their chair.
