Lord, Show US YourGlory!

Exodus 33:13-18 (NKJV)
13 Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people."
14 And He said, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."
15 Then he said to Him, "If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.
16 For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, except You go with us? So we shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth."
17 So the Lord said to Moses, "I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name."
18 And he said, "Please, show me Your glory."

1. Moses Was No Stranger To The Presence And Glory Of God.

A. On the Backside of Midian God spoke to Moses from a burning bush and told him to take off his shoes for he was standing on holy ground.

Exodus 3:5 Then He [God] said, “Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.”

B. Moses had witnessed the glory of God in the cloud that led by day and the firey cloud that shown by night.

----- Moses had learned to move when the cloud (God’s Glory) moved and to stand still when It stood still.

Page 2

C. Moses had seen God’s glory in a limited sense:

Exodus 24:12; 15 – 17

12Then the Lord said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and be there; and I will give you tablets of stone, and the law and commandments which I have written, that you may teach them.”

15Then Moses went up into the mountain, and a cloud covered the mountain.

16Now the glory of the Lord rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud.

17The sight of the glory of the Lordwas like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel.

D. Moses had seen God Face to Face in the wilderness Tabernacle…

Exodus 33:11 “So the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend…”

2. Moses Had Witnessed God’s Presence With The Children Of Israel.

A. Moses remembered how God had brought him and the Children of Israel out of bondage in Egypt:

1) Plagues

2) Drowning of pharaoh’s army in red sea

3) Provision of the “manna”

B. He had seen God intervene when they wanted meat:

Exodus 16:10 – 12

10Now it came to pass, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.

11And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

12“I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. And you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’

Page 3

C. When the Children of Israel sanctified themselves in Exodus 19…

Exodus 19:16 – 18

16Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were thundering and lightning’s, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled.

17And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.

18Now Mount Sinaiwas completely in smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly.

D. He had heard God declare He wanted to dwell with them…

Exodus 25:8 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.

E. HOWEVER - In our text, Moses witnessed the backsliding of Israel

F. While Moses was on Mt. Sinai worshiping and receiving from God, Aaron had led them into sin…

Exodus 32:1-6

1Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”

2And Aaron said to them, “Break off the golden earrings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.”

3So all the people broke off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron.

4And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf.

Page 4

Then they said, “This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!”

5So when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow is a feast to the Lord.”

6Then they rose early on the next day, offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

1) They had turned from God – but they took their “Worship

Habits” into their Idol worship…

2) They made an idol calf out of gold

3) They offered burnt offerings to the idol

4) They brought peace offerings to the idol

5) From their sacrifice – they rose up to play!

  • Too many today are “playing worship”
  • They remember enough “right things” to pacify their selfish desires
  • BUT they are worshiping idols

2 Timothy 3:4 & 5 (In the last days men shall be) “…lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

3. Moses Cried, “Lord, Show Me Your Glory!”

A. Moses had to see something he had not witnessed before!

B. Moses led the Children of Israel to repentance then he entered the tabernacle…

Exodus 33:9 And it came to pass, when Moses entered the tabernacle, that the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses.

Page 5

C. Even though he had been in God’s presence,

Even though he had been in the pillar of cloud in the tabernacle,

Even though he had talked face to face with God,

D. Moses declared…

Exodus 33:18 … "Please, show me Your glory."

E. What did Moses want?

1) He wanted something fresh

2) He wanted something new

F. Moses had witnessed the fire on the mountain

G. Moses had witnessed the mountain quaking under his feet at God’s

presence.

H. BUT Moses cried, “Lord, PLEASE Show me Your glory!”

Conclusion:

We need to cry, “Lord, show us Your glory!”

  • We’ve witnessed the power of salvation
  • We’ve felt the power of the Holy Ghost
  • We’ve seen miracles performed…
  • We need a new, fresh, overwhelming, life changing glory cloud to come

down and consume us!
