Lord of the Flies – SURVIVOR

You thought you were going to enjoy a nice, long vacation at a tropical resort; however, halfway through your journey, your plane crashes in the middle of the ocean. Most of the passengers die in the crash, but you and a few other survivors manage to swim to an island a mile away. The plane sinks almost immediately, but you and the other survivors grab some supplies before swimming to the shore.

Half-swimming and half dragged by the waves, you and your fellow survivors get washed up on shore on the white sands of a tropical island. About ten feet in, dark and foreboding jungles loom, but even from this distance, you can see some of the trees bear fruit.

Pick FOUR total items that you and your group managed to salvage:

Rules of the game:

You, your classmates, and five “extras” comprise the only survivors of the crash. Your job is to stay healthy long enough to survive while you wait for rescue.

The game begins four hours until sundown on Day One. Your job today is to determine what items you’ve managed to save, and how/where you will sleep tonight.

Then, each normal day, you will submit an order sheet on which you will select which activity will consume most of the day (hunting, resting, building a shelter, etc). You will also be able to submit short written orders which will be discussed later.

Health, food, and water:

Your group starts with 10 Health Points. If your health hits 0, everyone in your group dies. For every school day your group spends at 5 or below health, a group member will die (starting with the extras).

There are a variety of ways your group can gain and lose health points.

·  You must eat and drink every day. If you do not, you will lose 1 health point.

·  If you do not have food and/or water, you will lose 2 health points.

*Starvation and dehydration will lead to a quick and unpleasant death!

Other scenarios or random daily occurrences may also take away health. Someone may break a leg or poor cleanliness practices may lead to the spread of a disease like dysentery.

You can gain health in a few ways – every so often, you’ll want to give your group a day off. This recovers health, especially if you have sources of entertainment. You may also be lucky enough to occasionally find items that will restore some health.

Orders:

Your group will fill out an order sheet each class we do this activity. The standard options are:

Hunt (if equipment and resources allow)/Water

(+3 food/+1 water)

Fish (if equipment and resources allow)/Water

(+2 food/+1 water)

Gather fruit/Water

(+1 food/+1 water)

Stock water (if equipment and resources allow)

(+3 water)

R & R

(+1 health, +2 if have resources for entertainment)

Build shelter

(-1 health for each day without shelter- different shelters will give different health)

Build/Maintain signal fire

(+1 health)

Explore

(random island card- may gain/lose resources, food, water, or health points)

At the bottom of the order sheet, there will also be a blank space if you wish to try and accomplish something else. For example, you need to specify making spears (if you have equipment to do it) before you can hunt. You can only specify one or two other orders, as you don’t have all day.

When you return to class, you will find out if your orders were successful. If you try to hunt without weapons, you’ll return the next day to find you didn’t get any food and that your group lost health in the process (fighting wild boars with bare fists is NOT a good idea). Once you create new items, be sure to write them on your resources list.

Additionally, your orders must be realistic to what you have. If you haven’t discovered a freshwater source, for example, you won’t get water. Therefore, it’s wise to plan what order you will accomplish things. If there is not apparent wildlife/fish/water source, you should explore for it first.

Finally, your teacher (me J) may change the weather on you. Most days it will be hot and sunny, but different weather may require different orders…

Be creative- creativity and realism will be rewarded!

Scenario days:

On certain days, we will have extended game sessions. During these sessions, your group will be presented with a scenario that you and your group will discuss. Then in your folder, you will write (in detail and complete sentences) how you plan on acting. The more detailed, the more creative, and the more logical you are, the more likely it is that the scenario will result in a positive outcome.

Acts of God:

Sometimes, life happens. To keep things interesting, your teacher may give your group a specific situation to deal with, whether it’s a typhoon, a volcanic eruption, or even a ship on the horizon. These situations will not be fair. Such is life.

Deaths:

It happens. When it happens to an extra, you may find your ability to gather food or accomplish tasks is reduced. If all of your extras die, your health will be reset at 5, but productivity will be halved (gathering fruit and water will result in +1/2, not +1). Keep your extras alive!

After your extras die, you and your group members may also die. This will mean that your group member will no longer be able to take part in any “physical” actions on the beach…they’ll sit with you, and still offer advice (as ghosts, maybe?), but they cannot do anything.
