Lord of the Flies

Final Projects

Your group (of 2-3 people) will choose TWO of the following projects to complete:

  1. Lord of the Flies Soundtrack: Make a CD of at least five songs that you feel would work as a soundtrack to the novel. For each song, provide a detailed analysis as to why you chose it for the soundtrack. This analysis should include literary evidence such as symbols, themes, situations the novels explored, etc. You should use quotes and text support in your analysis. Each song should specifically relate to the novel in some way. You will then need:
  2. Typed or written copies of all lyrics
  3. Typed or written analysis papers
  4. To burn the songs onto a CD (or copies of each song)
  5. Create a CD case, complete with front and back artwork as well as an insert (it should look like something you could purchase at the store)
  6. To be prepared to present your soundtrack to the class. You will choose TWO of your five songs and share them with us. We will listen to them and you will present your reasoning as well as showcase your CD cover. Dress as if you were pitching your idea to executives!
  1. News Program: Create a news program about the events of the novel. Your program must have an interview, breaking news, weather report, sports, a profile piece (character study), and an “In memoriam” tribute.
  2. You can either film your news program or perform it live in front of the class.
  3. This should look professional (news reporters don’t wear sweatpants!)…this means EVEN IF YOU FILMED IT, you should arrive to class dressed nicely.
  4. You will need to design a news set and backgrounds for your “studio.”
  5. Use text based evidence and direct quotes from the novel to help you.
  6. Be creative…yes, you must use evidence from the novel, but obviously, you will have to think outside the box for some of the reports
  7. Make sure you turn in a typed copy of your news program to me.
  1. Graphic Novel/Comic Book: Recreate the story in a graphic novel/comic book on 10-15 pages. Chose what you think are the most important scenes and tell the story OR try to retell all of it. You should use direct quotes and/or text references to narrate the story. You may include a dedication page if you want. The quality of your project will be determined by the following:
  2. The extent to which your book retells the story
  3. Quality/effort of the artwork
  4. Inclusion of an introduction (foreword) in which you explain what you were trying to capture in the creation of your book.
  5. The use of a conclusion to wrap up your book
  6. A PowerPoint version of your comic book that can be presented and explained to the class. Dress as if you were pitching your idea to executives!
  1. Lord of the Flies Game/Video Game: Turn the novel into a game! Use text based evidence to create this. You should, in some way, use quotes and/or text reference in every aspect of the game’s creation. The purpose of this project is to share your knowledge of the book with others and to test them on their knowledge! You may base your game on something that already exists, or you can come up with something entirely new. You must have:
  2. Detailed instructions on how your game is played
  3. A box/container of some kind…designed and detailed.
  4. A demonstration of your game (have others play it!)
  5. A commercial/print ad that you would use to market your game to the public
  6. Dress as if you were pitching your idea to executives!
  1. Lord of the Flies motion picture/play: Turn the novel into a short film (can be serious or humorous). Use text based evidence in your creation. You must have:
  2. Cast of characters
  3. A script of at least 8 pages, including stage directions, camera positions, setting, etc. (should be typed)
  4. Videotape your performance (preferred) or perform it in front of the class. Make sure you have costumes, set, music (if needed), etc.
  5. Promotional poster for your movie/play. Include title, director, tag-line and release date.
  1. Funeral Service: You were friends with the deceased boys on the island. You have decided to conduct a funeral service in their honor. Prepare a eulogy and an obituary for three characters who lost their lives on the island. (You can think creatively here…just because they didn’t die doesn’t mean they didn’t lose their lives…) You are required to:
  2. Read the obituaries and deliver the eulogies to the class. (You should dress appropriately).
  3. Include discussions on their character, time you spent together, etc. Use quotes and text support to help strengthen your eulogy.
  4. Provide a photo montage of the boys’ lives (creativity a MUST)
  5. Provide me with copies on the obituaries and eulogies. The eulogies should be at least 2 pages in length (each); Obituaries are shorter, usually a paragraph highlighting major points in a life.
  1. Trial: Someone must be blamed for the events that took place on the island. As a group, decide who you are going to blame and create a case. You will need to come up with a prosecution and a defense. You will need to use text references and quotes to help with the trial. You will re-enact this trial for your classmates (who will act as the jury). You must:
  2. Have opening statements for the prosecution and defense
  3. Conduct a trial that includes at least two witnesses for the defense and two witnesses for the prosecution
  4. Have closing statements for the defense and prosecution
  5. Provide copies of opening and closing statements as well as questions and answers from the witnesses.
  6. Dress appropriately—this is a trial!
  7. Have fun with this…can be serious or silly. Think crime drama!

Ultimately, I would love for each of these projects to be done by at least one group. I will put a limit on the number of groups that can do the same project…we need a variety for the presentations. I will make that decision when I know how many groups we have.

YOU WILL BE REWARDED FOR GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND… BE CREATIVE! 
