Lord of the Flies – Mixed Media Assignment

Scenario:The year is 2010, and you are spending your summer vacation visiting your grandmother’s cottage in the English countryside. In an attempt to keep yourself occupied, you explore the nooks and crannies of your grandparent’s house. In the attic, you stumble across a dusty, but intriguing, disc.

When you play it, the first image you see is a dusty treasure chest. Subsequent images include a survival letter from a journal, 3 visuals relating to someone’s life on an island, background scenic images containing lyrics during which 3 sound recording are heard, and a series of quotations (at least 6) which reflect this person’s experiences on the island. You quickly come to discover that this is a carefully preserved record of the experiences of a person stranded on a deserted island in the Pacific during World War II.

Task: Select the character (Ralph, Simon, Jack, Piggy, Samneric, Percival,or Roger) for whom you will create this mixed media treasure chest. Your digital treasure chest must contain the following items:

  • A letter reflecting on the character’s experiences on the island
  • Three (3) visualsof objects which represent the character’s experiences on the island
  • A visual of a record cover
  • The importation of three (3) songs representing the beginning, middle, and end of the character’s experiences on the island (include song lyrics)
  • Significant quotations that provide insight into the character’s psyche

The Chest

Design (Photoshop) a well decorated treasure chest, which is time period appropriate. Keep in mind that these chests may have been passed down from previous generations and may contain old stamps, mailing addresses, etc. In addition, your chest should contain 6-10 quotes hinting at whose items are inside. The quotations may be pasted onto the outside of the chest.

“Survivor” Letter/ Journal Entry

In a well organized journal entry of 300-350 words summarize the character’s experience on the island. The entry must be in first person and include the characters feelings about other characters (i.e. questioning their motives and intentions), feelings on leaving the island, and hopes for the future. In addition to creative details, make reference to specific events in the text. For added impact, do a voice recording of the journal entry to accompany the visual for these slides.

Objects and their Significance

Provide three objects to represent the character’s experiences on the island. For each object, include a 100 word summary of the significance of that object to the character. Possible symbols include the conch, fire, etc… Explanations must be in first person. For added impact, do a voice recording of the written explanation to accompany the visual for these slides.

Record Cover (Optional)

Design a visual of an attractive record cover. It must have both a captivating title and clever graphics. Under the title of each song, include a brief (2-3 sentences) justification for why you selected that song. The record cover will be a visual in your media project.

Record Soundtrack

Import musicinto your media project. The music must illustrate the character’s stay on the island. You must include a minimum of three songs accompanied by lyrics to represent the beginning, middle, and end of your character’s stay. Each music selection must have a different and appropriate visual background.
