London Cancer CNS Role Development Programme (Explore)

Mentorship Training

Programme and Application Form

1. About the CNS Role Development (Explore) Programme

2015-17 Role Development Programme

In 2015, in response to the growing demand for Clinical Nurse Specialists within Oncology and a decline in applications/poor retention rates for the post across the North, Central and East London Network, a succession planning programme was developed byMacmillan Cancer Support in partnership with London Cancer.

The programme was piloted and evaluated throughout 2015, targeted at primarily band 5 and 6 nursing staff looking to progress to the CNS role, and was found to be an extremely useful resource for expanding understanding of the Cancer CNS role and knowledge of local services, increasing confidence in working autonomously, and within the MDT, and improving communication with both patients and colleagues.

Additionally, evaluation of the programme found that the mentorship support which was provided alongside online learning modules to be one of the most vital aspects of the training design. Students commented that mentors were able to provide much needed support, guidance and reflection on a range of topics covered throughout the course as well as building confidence, ensuring motivationand maintaining reflective practice.

To ensure we are able to continue to offer such valuable support to an increasingly popular programme the London Cancer network has developed the Cancer CNS Mentorship Training Programme. With the aim of creating the next generation of CNS Mentors, the programme will include a one-day training course with on-going support from Macmillan’s Mentor Scheme, UCLH’s Coaching and Mentoring team andUCLH Cancer Admin team to coordinate and support the journey of all training mentors.
