Kentish Town Community Centre(KTCC (registered charity 1104278 – Company Number 05020050) is an independent non-profit organisation serving Kentish Town in Camden, North London. It opened in 2004, in a new building, to provide activities and meeting spaces for all ages. It has subsequently undergone much expansion and now boosts a multi-purpose first floor studio, lift and new meeting room.
The Centre offers a full range of services and activities including the Little Stars Drop In for children aged 0-5 and their parents and carers; a youth project; IT classes;massage &crafts for over 50s;ESOL classes with crèche; drama for adults and children, etc. KTCC also offers a wide range of exercise and health opportunities including zumba, pilates, women-only exercise with crèche, healthy bones class for over 60s, reflexology and yoga. The centre is also hired out for community meetings, including councillor surgeriesand parties in the evenings / weekends.
The role will involve:
  • making links with other providers and establishing new partnerships to help us deliver more for older people;
  • developing and promoting new activities for older people;
  • developing mechanisms to give older people more of a say in what KTCC offers;
  • taking steps to ensure that KTCC is in touch with those older people who are most isolated in the local area;
  • recruiting and supporting volunteers in support of the project; and
  • fundraising to support project activities.
The postholder will need at least two years’ experience of working with older people in a community setting, sound project management skills, the ability to fundraise for activities, and the ability to motivate and manage volunteers.
Key purpose of job

Purpose of the job

  • To reach frail and isolated older people who may not be involved in any activities in the area and encourage them to take part.
  • To promote the social inclusion of older people in Caversham
  • To provide outreach support, social and engagement opportunities for local older people within the remit of CEPO’s objectives
  • To identify people over 50 who do not currently access any services
  • To engage tenants and residents association and local GP practices in the project
  • To provide a point of contact for local information for older people

Duties

  • To coordinate and deliver activities for older people, based at Kentish Town Community Centre and at other local venues.
  • To establish a welcoming, safe environment for local older people
  • To enable, support and encourage participation in all appropriate activities and discussions.
  • To be aware of and inform older people of other activities taking place in the area.
  • To encourage older people to put forward their views on issues that affect their quality of life in their neighbourhood while providing opportunities for social interaction.
  • To work closely with CEPO and the Caversham Neighbourhood Partnership.
  • To research and apply for funding opportunities to continue with this project.
  • To report regularly to CEPO Steering Group
  • To attend and contribute to regular supervision sessions.
  • To value diversity by assisting people from all communities
  • To carry out own administration and maintenance of records

Experience & knowledge

  • Experience working within a community setting
  • Understanding of the needs and problems of older people
  • Knowledge of services available to older people and how to access them is desirable
