Course Description and Expectation:

The first part of the year will be designated to learning the basic fundamentals of reading music and playing a musical instrument. As the year progresses, the student will develop the advanced fundaments to confidently perform in a large ensemble. A pencil is required for every class.

Learning Objectives:

Students will:

·  Develop proper embouchure, hand position and posture for playing a musical instrument.

·  Develop an understanding of tone production and good intonation.

·  Develop the knowledge of scales and key signatures.

·  Demonstrate the understanding of counting rhythms.

·  Develop an understanding of music vocabulary.

·  Demonstrate the understanding of proper band balance and blend.

·  Demonstrate proper rehearsal and performing techniques.

·  Confidently perform music at the appropriate level or higher.

·  Understand the importance of teamwork.

·  Display an appreciation for music in a variety of periods and styles.

Course Evaluation and Grading: (How will the student be graded throughout the school year?)

·  Major Grades 45%-Playing Tests, Written tests & Performances

·  Daily Grades 50%- Practice Checklists, Pop Quizzes and other classroom procedure expectations.

·  Performance Evaluations and Reading: Weekly Assigned Reading/Literary Works not contained in course textbook 5%-- Using music terminology, students will submit a written evaluation of one performance per week.

Also, various articles or other supplemental reading material related to band will be provided by the instructor.

Major Project Guidelines and Expectations:

Each member of the Lomax Junior High School Beginning Band will participate in the following: Performance with the junior varsity band at the Winter Concert and Spring Concert, Solo and Ensemble performance.

·  Reminders will be periodically sent using the Remind App.
