OXFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL

Our vision:

“To inspire with the joy of lifelong learning”

Sonning Common Primary School is situated in a large, rural village at the southern tip of Oxfordshire, five miles north of Reading and five miles west of Henley-on-Thames.

Our school was opened in 1931 and became a primary school in 1957. We are a values-led school which means we focus on good relationships, teamwork and caring for others. Our aim is to provide a calm and nurturing environment for learning, where both children and staff feel safe and respected. Currently we have 390 pupils on roll from rising fives to eleven year old children and a teaching staff of 21 teachers who are aided by a highly regarded team of support staff.

The site is enviably large and consists of two teaching blocks, the first for Key Stage 1, Foundation Stage and the school administration and the second for Key Stage 2. We are fortunate to share our site with the village library which is attached to the school and opens to pupils when it is closed to the public. From September 2009 we became two form entry throughout. All classes are equipped with computer equipment including interactive whiteboards, in addition to which there is a dedicated computer suite and a range of mobile laptops. The school hall accommodates all staff and children for assemblies and is used for P.E. and at lunchtime for school lunches which are cooked in our kitchen on site.

The buildings are housed in extensive grounds which include a playground for each key stage, large fields for football, rugby, athletics and cricket, an adventure trail area, willow classroom, amphitheatre and paddock for nature activities. In addition the Foundation Stage children enjoy their own specialised play area. Children at Sonning Common Primary School have regular swimming lessons, whether off-site for Year five and six pupils or in our own indoor swimming pool for pupils Years one to four.

Children can be looked after both before and after school with our successful Breakfast and After School Clubs and we operate a range of after school activities such as chess, choir, ICT, drama and various sports including judo. As part of a local cluster group of five schools we are constantly extending our facilities and services to our local community.

Our school is proud to share its site with Bishopswood Special School. Bishopswood and Sonning Common pupils are encouraged to share activities and facilities as much as practical.

Please see our website for more information about our popular community school.
