Computer Facilities:

For whom?

The computer facilities of the Arts Faculty are only accessible to those included in the categories in the right column. / Arts Faculty bachelor’s / master’s students

Students of other faculties have no access to the computer facilities.

Where?

The computers of the Arts Faculty can be found on the first floor of the LipsiusBuilding

Computers are also available in a number of self-study rooms at other locations throughout the University. It is possible to access your Arts Faculty documents from these locations.

Logging in:your ULCNaccount

Logging in to the computers, U-Twist, Blackboard and Digibeeld

In order to log in to the computers you need a username and a password. This is your so-called ULCNaccount, which you receive automatically if you are registered as a student at LeidenUniversity. This information will be sent to your home address at the beginning of your studies. Your username consists of your student number preceded by the prefix ‘s’.

U-Twist: Registering for courses/examinations

If you wish to follow a course or take an examination, you may be requested to register electronically using U-Twist. You can find U-Twist at under U-Twist. The rest of the procedure is self-explanatory. In a number of cases, you will be unable to register using U-Twist, in which case we advise you to contact the secretary of your department.

Blackboard

Some courses make use of Blackboard. Blackboard is the virtual learning environment of LeidenUniversity. On Blackboard, you can find your schedule, carry out assignments and download course materials. You can usually sign up for a Blackboard course yourself. Digibeeld

Digibeeld isa web-based educational tool for digital imaging. You can log in to Digibeeld ( using your ULCN account. For any questions about Digibeeld, see

Hologram

Hologram is a Windows application for language acquisition which has been installed in the computer rooms of the Arts Faculty. You can use Hologram in the computer rooms if your tutor has added your name to the Hologram users group. For all content questions concerning Hologram, contact your tutor. I’ve lost my ULCN password

Have you lost your account information? (Or did you fail to receive the letter?)

You can obtain your account information or a new password at the University Services Department of the Arts Faculty (in the LipsiusBuilding, ground floor). Don’t forget to bring along your student ID or some other proof of registration (if your proof of registration does not include a photograph, you must also bring an identification document, such as a passport or a driver’s licence).

One of the computers in the computer room is defective

Write down the number of the computer (WSD75…), as well as the room number, and go to the University Services Department where you can complete a technical malfunction form.

I am unable to print

Can you issue a print command? / No→ / Save your document on your personal network disk. Go to the University Services Department in the hall of the LipsiusBuilding and complete a technical malfunction form.
Go to the University Library and print the document there.

Has the printer run out of paper? / Yes→ / Go to the University Services Department and ask them to add paper to the printer.

I am unable to log in on one of the computers in the computer rooms of the Arts Faculty

Are you registered as a regularstudent, subsidiary subject student, a la carte student or contract student at the Arts Faculty? / No→ / You have no access to the computer rooms at the Arts Faculty. The computer facilities of the Arts Faculty are reserved for Arts Faculty students (and students of the Faculty of Philosophy).

Have you paid the tuition fees? / No→ / You have not yet officially registered as a student. You therefore have no access to the university computer facilities.

Are you in possession of a student ID or some other proof of registration? / No→ / Enquire at Plexus (Kaiserstraat 25, ICS Helpdesk) how soon you can expect to receive your account information and student ID. You can also enquire whether there are any problems with your registration. At the helpdesk, you can obtain a temporary proof of registration which you can use to request your account information from the University Services Department (Cleveringaplaats 1, LipsiusBuilding). Don’t forget to bring a proof of identity (passport, driver’s licence).

Are you only registered as a subsidiary subject student, a la carte student or contract student at the Arts Faculty? / No→ / Do you have your ULCN username and password? / No→ / If you are registered, you have received a letter containing your ULCN username and password. If you have not received this letter, go to the University Services Department to request your account information. If you have lost or forgotten your password, you will be issued a new one.

Did you register for a course or a subsidiary subject yourself, making use of U-Twist? / Something must have gone wrong in the transfer of data from the central system to the learning environment of the Arts Faculty. Complete a technical malfunction form (which you can obtain at the University Services Department) and try to continue working in the University Library. Data saved in the University Library can also be accessed through the Arts Faculty environment.
NB: if you have made three unsuccessful log-in attempts, your account has been blocked (meaning that you will be unable to log in to the computers in the computer room but also to Blackboard, etc.). In that case, please contact the University Services Department.
No→ / If your department does not allow for course registration through U-Twist, please register by contacting the secretariat of your department.
If your department does allow for course registration through U-Twist, please register through U-Twist (for further information, see menu U-Twist). You can do so using the information terminals in the hall of the LipsiusBuilding.

I cannot access my course information in Blackboard

Has your tutor informed you that you can register for a Blackboard course yourself? / No→ / First try to register for the course yourself. If you are unable to register, report the problem using the questionnaire form at Blackboard helpdesk will contact you as soon as possible.

Register making use of the manual at 9.1.If you cannot find the relevant course using the [Course Catalogue], please try and find the course using the ‘search’ command (you can find it under the pull-downmenu [Courses]).
You can register making use of the information terminals in front of the information desk in the LipsiusBuilding. Remember that this only gives you access to Blackboard.

I don’t know how to register for a Blackboard course.

  • Log in toBlackboard(
  • Click Clickon the pull-down menu [Courses] and search for the relevant course under the heading [Course Catalogue] (Faculty>Department>Course). You can also find a course using the [Course Search] command.
  • You will see a button [Enrol] appear to the right of the course name. Click on [Enrol]. If your tutor has provided you with an access code, you can type it in here.
  • Click on [Submit]. You now have access to the course. Next time you log in the course will appear on the [My Institution] page.

Note that you willsometimes see a [Preview] button appear to the right of the course. This button allows you to visit the course as a ‘guest’. As a guest, you have no access to the interactive components of the course, such as tests, polls, discussion forums and assignments.
