Interscholastic Assistant, JV or Modified Coach Job Description:

Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, and Varsity Head Coach, Assistant Coaches shall foster the quest for excellence by assisting in creating an educational and competitive experience for student athletes within an atmosphere of sportsmanship, developing individual and team potential by promoting high standards of competence, character, civility, and citizenship, as described in the Educational Framework for Athletics (EFA).

Coaches shall instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategies and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. Student-athletes shall receive instruction designed to: promote the formulation of moral values; achieve individual & team accomplishments; develop acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, self-confidence; and build individual self-esteem.

Minimum Requirements:

Pursuant to the Commissioner’s Regulations, Section 135.4 © (7) (i) © and 135.5 all coaches must possess a provisional or a permanent coaching license to coach an interscholastic sports team in New York State. The coach who possesses a provisional coaching license must be taking the necessary preparation toward permanent certification to coach in the Locust Valley Central School District.

Pursuant to the Commissioner’s Regulation 135.5 Section 3001-B, an interscholastic coach must be certified and re-certified in first aid every three years to be eligible to coach in New York State. Each coach must also be certified in CPR and AED annually. A coach will not be appointed by the Board of Education unless he/she posses valid first aid certification prior to the beginning of each sports season. Amendments, which change certification requirements, shall be adopted as necessary to continue to insure all coaches are in compliance. These certification requirements also apply to all volunteer coaches.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

In order to meet the performance expectations of a coaching position, the coach must possess and demonstrate the following for selection and retention:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the basic and advanced aspects of the sport.
  • Understanding of child growth, development and behavior.
  • Knowledge of assessment techniques and monitoring strategies to identify student/athlete’s efforts, performance, strengths, and weakness.
  • Motivational techniques and strategies to improve individual and team performance.
  • An appreciation of the unique individual differences and maturation (physically, intellectually, emotionally) of the players.
  • Ability to provide training and coaching to improve individual players and team performance.
  • Ability to effectively organize, and supervise practices, scrimmages, and games.
  • Ability to establish relationships and effectively communicate with both students and adults.

Duties:

The following duties and responsibilities may be performed by both the Head Coach and Assistant Coaches or where appropriate delegated to the Assistant Coach under the direction and supervision of the Head Varsity Coach. Under the direction and supervision of the Head Varsity Coach the Assistant Coach may act as Head Coach for either the Junior Varsity or Middle School teams and where appropriate supervise or direct other Assistant Coaches in consultation with the Head Varsity Coach.

Responsibilities:

  1. Organizational
  1. Ensures that all aspects of the program comply with the guidelines, rules and policies that have been established by the School District, League, Section, and State and National Federation.
  2. Promulgates information about the program and tryouts to recruit eligible student candidates for participation in the program.
  3. Confirms that all participants have received a physical exam and parent permission. The appropriate forms have been distributed to, collected from and filed for each participant.
  4. Distributes and collects signed training rules for each participant.
  5. Conducts an appropriate try-out for all candidates. Develops and communicates criteria for selection to appropriate teams (Varsity or Junior Varsity). Selects team members and communicates in a timely and sensitive manner to participants in tryouts.
  6. Formulates and submits team lists and rosters, to the Director of Physical Education and Athletics.
  7. Distributes and posts practice and game schedules.
  8. Collaborates with and assists the Director of Physical Education and Athletics in the formulation of scrimmages and non-league game schedules; the determination of transportation times and destinations, and in the completion of requisition forms.
  9. Establishes locker room, training room and office procedures.
  10. Maintain an updated inventory of uniforms, equipment and supplies used within the program.
  11. Assist the Director of Physical Education and Athletics in the development of the program’s annual budget.
  12. Maintains and reports results, statistics, etc.
  13. Establishes and announces criteria for awards/recognition.
  1. Coaching
  1. Has a thorough knowledge of the sport and develops daily practice plans and game plans throughout the season designed to maximize and improve student competency in the sport.
  2. Has a thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Locust Valley Board of Education and implements these policies as required.
  3. Has knowledge of and complies with state, conference, league and school rules and regulations for the sports coached.
  4. Attends all practices, games and is present on all modes of transportation. Provides assistance, guidance and supervision of athletes at practices games and on transportation to and from games.
  5. Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program.
  6. Maintains a stocked medical kit for practice and contests, complete with student emergency information cards.
  7. Attends conferences, workshops and clinics in order to stay updated on all aspects of the program/sport.
  8. Completes and submits all accident or incident reports in a timely manner.
  9. Displays and encourages sportsmanship. Respects officials and works with team /students to understand the aspects of sportsmanship relating to the rules, teammates, opponents and spectators.
  10. Represents the School District and the program in a positive manner and serves as a role model for students
  1. Administrative Duties:
  1. Assists in scheduling of games and transportation including tournaments and special sporting events.
  2. Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled facility times. Coordinates his/her program with maintenance, custodial and school employees.
  3. Provides documentation to the AD to fulfill state, section, conference, league and school requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, health interviews, athletic eligibility and academic and /or sports recognitions of student athletes.
  4. Provides proper safeguards for the maintenance and protection of assigned equipment supplies.
  1. Responsibilities to Students:
  1. Provides information relative to training rules and any other unique regulation/rule of his/her sport to each athlete.
  2. Directs student managers and statisticians on respective teams.
  3. Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary. Contacts the legal guardian of a student when an athlete is ineligible.
  4. Councils, advises and assist students, where appropriate, on athletic participation at the post secondary level.
  5. Serves as a resource for students involved in the college recruitment process.
  6. Writes letters of reference upon request as appropriate for students who have participated in the program.
  1. Responsibilities to the Staff, Parents, and other adults associated with the athletic program:
  1. Communicates information regarding the school’s mission, philosophy and others aspects of the athletic program.
  2. Communicates information regarding specific sports concerns; schedules, tryouts, etc.
  3. Cooperates in addressing concern that requires our attention regarding policies and/or procedures.
  1. Equipment & Facilities:
  1. Is accountable for all equipment and supplies. Notifies AD if any equipment is lost or not returned. Arranges for issuing and storing of equipment and submits an annual inventory.
  2. Recommends budgetary items for next year in his/her area of the program.
  3. Monitors and supervises the locker rooms and coaches offices.
  4. Permits the athletes to be in only authorized areas of the building at appropriate times as deemed by the administration.
  5. Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games.
  6. Instills in each player a respect for equipment, supplies, care and proper use.
  1. Program Responsibilities:
  1. Communicates and responds to inquires in a timely manner to students, parents and administration.
  2. May assists the Head Varsity Coach in carrying out staff or sport responsibilities as required.
  3. Understands the proper administrative chain of command and refers all student and parent request or grievances through the AD.
  4. Coordinates press releases and school announcements.
  5. Instructs team members as to changes in the rules and teaches the fundamentals of his/her sport.
  6. Maintains and submits a record of team and individual statistics on a timely basis.
  7. Coordinates and participates in post-season award ceremonies as appropriate.
  8. Attends all staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments as required.
  9. Arrives early enough before practice, contests and meetings to adequately prepare for the days activities. Remains afterwards to help players with problems or to become involved in staff discussions and to supervise until all players are transported home.
  10. Helps in the planning and implementation of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight training programs. (If applicable)
  11. Strives to improve his/her knowledge and skills by attending clinics and using resources made available by the head coach.
  12. Provides reports as requested on student participation, academic performance of student athletes and program results.
  13. Performs such other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and that may be requested by the Athletic Director or Head Varsity Coach where applicable.
