About the District:

The Pierce District has two community colleges (Pierce College Fort Steilacoom located in Lakewood, Washington and Pierce College Puyallup located in Puyallup, Washington) and an extended learning program. About the Position and Qualifications:

We invite applications from qualified individuals who are interested in teaching a wide range of courses in the Biology/Health Science Department at Pierce College Puyallup.

Essential Functions:

§  Teach courses in anatomy and physiology for allied health science majors, general zoology for biology majors and other biology courses as assigned.

§  Conduct assigned classes in a manner that promotes student success. Incorporate various teaching styles and technology.

§  Work closely in and out of classroom with students having a wide variety of interests, ages, backgrounds and levels of academic preparation.

§  Collaborate with members of the Biological Sciences Departments (across the district) on planning activities, course development and projects.

§  Participate in the student advising program and district wide efforts to improve student retention and success.

§  Participate as a member of working committees dealing with instruction, student matters and/or district related concerns.

§  Work effectively with colleagues and students of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

§  Attend and participate in department and division meetings.

§  Be available to students daily through scheduled office hours.

§  Perform other academic duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required: Master’s degree in Biological Sciences or a closely related field. Evidence of successful teaching experience.

Preferred: Teaching experience in college level-anatomy and physiology and other biological sciences. Demonstrated commitment to promoting excellence in undergraduate human biology education. Related professional experience and/or activities in clinical, medical or research settings.

Terms of Employment:

This position, which is contingent upon funding, is a full-time, tenure-track assignment of 172 contracted days per year, anticipated to begin September 2008.

Initial placement of this position will be at Pierce College Puyallup (located in Puyallup, Washington); however, evening, split daily schedule and/or work at more than one site may be included in the assignment. Initial placement is based on the current full-time faculty salary schedule, and is dependent upon education and experience.
