After Surgery Care for Female/Male Cats
Your cat should be kept in a warm place for 3-4 hours after surgery. Wait at least 4 hours before giving your cat anything to eat. Start with ¼ of normal feeding amount. Only feed small amounts the first day. Your cat may sleep more than normal. There are no sutures to remove. Watch for excessive bleeding, swelling or yellowish discharge, or if your cat does not eat at least by the day after his/her surgery. Call our office, Dr. Murphy, if you have any further questions. 717-261-9738 or 1-800-577-9738.
PREPARING FOR THE POST-OP CARE OF FERAL CATS
Shelter: The cat(s) will need to be kept out of the elements in a warm dry area for a minimum of 24-36 hours. When selecting the appropriate shelter, care should be taken to avoid subjecting the cat(s) to extreme temperatures. During winter months or colder weather the shelter should provide adequate protections from wind, snow, rain and cold. During summer months and warmer weather the shelter should provide adequate protection against rain, sun and extreme heat. Weather permitting, a garage, barn or basement may provide ideal shelter for the feral cat(s). Male castrations MUST BE contained a minimum of 24 hours. Female spays MUST BE contained a minimum of 36-48 hours.
Bedding: Immediately following surgery the cat’s body temperature will drop, therefore, it is pertinent to maintain the cats body temperature especially in colder weather. An insulator should be used. For example wrap the cat(s) in towels/blankets or line the carrier and cover the cat with straw. To provide further warmth and insulation, an old comforter can be draped over the carrier. (This is not necessary if the normal air temperature is already warm. Although even in warm weather, take into account that overnight temperature may drop and plan accordingly.)
Anesthesia: The effect of this drug is directly on the brain to temporarily abolish pain, apprehension, consciousness, and other sensory functions. After administration of these agent the cat(s) will gradually regain these functions, but not totally for the following 8-12 hour period. Expect the cat(s) to appear unusual for several hours after surgery, as his/her brain will gradually return to normal condition.
