East Waterford

Zip Code: 17021

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

History and Background of Community/Neighborhood:

East Waterford is a small town in the middle of Juniata County. It has less then 200 people living in town. Built in 1790 as a stage coach stop, this central Pennsylvania local landmark known as 'The American House' has also served as a drover's tavern, a hotel/eatery and currently as a large private residence.

A 'stone's throw' to trout streams and short 3 mile drive to popular hunting areas. Near antique and flea markets, horse drawn buggy and sleigh rides, many small town events (parades, carnival grounds).

OBSERVATIONS:

Social Climate Observations:

This is a very poor rural town. It has less then 200 people living in town. The average salary is $28,000. Most of the people work at the lumber mill. There is a Fireman's Carnival in August. This is a big event for the city. People come from all around to attend this event. They even have a section of town with permanent structures designed just for this carnival. Residents hunt and fish. Many do it to provide food for their families.

Physical Climate Observations:

This town is surrounded by hunting cabins. It is in the middle of state game lands. There is not cell phone reception or radio stations in town. I had to drive fifteen minutes just to get a radio and cell signal.

Economic Climate Observations:

Most people work at the lumber mill. They do not have much money. The volunteer fire department is very important to the people of this town.

Spiritual Climate Observations:

There are two churches in town. One is Presyterian.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Recommendation Summary:

This area would be very hard to produce a healthy stable church. The size of the town, location, and economic conditions would present some very difficult challenges. However, this town does need to hear about Jesus. Maybe someone will be able to start a Bible study in town or minister to them.
