A KYEDHH Workshop featuring Kristin DiPerri and Literacy and the DHH Student offered by…
October 18th and 19th, 2013
Located at the Kentucky School for the Deaf, Kerr Hall
Friday October 18, 2013 6:30-9:00pm
Title: Literacy Foundations: Providing a Strong Start for DHH Students
Existing English Language Arts curricula is designed for hearing children who start Kindergarten with fluent English skills. Thus lessons are presented and developed to practice already known skills. In contrast, many Deaf and Hard of Hearing children start Kindergarten in a markedly different way. They often have minimal exposure or understanding of how English works. They need to learn how English works with lessons that are geared to their starting point and developed sufficiently. In this seminar we will look at the components of the Bedrock Literacy Curriculum-a new literacy curriculum designed for DHH students who need an accessible curriculum intended for their needs. In this evening seminar we will look specifically at developing reading comprehension, writing fluency and vocabulary from the start. The components of the program are applicable to all DHH students regardless of modality. However lessons are designed to be as visual as possible and without relying on phonetic information. In this way all students can take advantage of building English in sensical ways. Further, the curriculum is designed for DHH students of all ages in order to provide the foundational elements that are necessary for a lifetime of literacy.

Title: Literacy Instruction with DHH Students: Establishing the Core Components
In this all day seminar we will look at the various components of the Bedrock Literacy Curriculum that students need in order to establish a firm foundation for English literacy development. Specific components will include: word class categorization, visual spelling and decoding unknown words strategies, beginning pronouns and prepositions, morphology (adding word endings-plural, possessive, etc.), sentence structure-subjects and predicates, and tense. This seminar will utilize an interactive format so that teachers have experience teaching specific lessons. Additionally we will also discuss a feasible way to document student objectives/learning to align with the Common Core State Standards.
