Local Scholarships Available to ACHS Seniors - 2018

Glenmore – Dykeland

Established in 1983 by Rev. Richard Taylor, a native of Amelia County in memory of Sally Steger Hardaway and her son Horace Hardaway.

Scholarship Amount – Varies –

  1. Student plans to attend a college or university in Virginia
  2. Student demonstrates financial need.
  3. Student with high academic ranking.
  4. Student motivated to achieve.

Dr. James T. O’Neal Medical Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate of Amelia County High School or Amelia Academy, who has submitted an application, expects to pursue studies in the field of medicine, and has been accepted by a post-secondary institution.

Scholarship Amount - $500

Jane Arnold Merit Scholarship

Established in 1989.

Scholarship Amount – Varies – 1 scholarship awarded in 2017for $5000

Criteria:

  1. Student planning to attend a 4-year college or university.
  2. Minimum “B” average.
  3. Clear financial need.

Wright Scholarship

Established in 1985.

Scholarship Amount - $500

Criteria:

  1. Senior planning to attend Longwood University or the College of William & Mary to pursue a career in education.
  2. Senior planning to attend a trade or technical school to pursue a vocation.

Glenwood Foods Scholarship

Scholarship Amount - $500

Criteria:

  1. Accepted to a 4-year college or university.
  2. Enrolled in an Agricultural Curriculum.
  3. Identified by the faculty as having those qualities necessary for success.
  4. Selected by a scholarship committee consisting of teachers, a counselor, and an administrator.

Miriam Eileen Harris Scholarship Fund

Established in 2000 by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Harris in memory of their daughter Miriam.

Scholarship Amount- $500

Criteria:

  1. Student is African-American.
  2. Student demonstrates Financial Need.
  3. Student plans to attend a 4-year college or university.
  4. Student plans to pursue a degree in engineering, humanities, or education.

ACHS Scholarship Fund

The money available in this fund is determined by contributions made by local businesses, previous graduating classes, and faculty and friends of Amelia County Public Schools.

Scholarship Amount – Varies

Criteria:

  1. Highest ranking seniors with need.

Russell Grove Association Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a senior who has a connection to Russell Grove High School, who is planning to pursue a 4-year college degree, and who has at least a 2.5 GPA.

Nicholas Spencer Montague Memorial Scholarship Fund

Established in 2005.

Scholarship Amount – Varies – 2 awarded in 2017

Criteria:

  1. Candidate must be an ACHS senior planning to attend an institution of higher learning the next academic year. (Mandatory)
  2. Candidate must have the highest moral character and integrity. (Mandatory)
  3. Candidate should have clear financial need. (Mandatory)
  4. Candidate should have achieved a strong record of school and/or community service in his or her school career. (Highly Desirable)
  5. Candidate should have demonstrated a clear commitment to excellence in all of his/her endeavors. (Highly Desirable)
  6. Candidate should be a highly self-motivated individual in both the areas of personal development and service to others. (Highly Desirable)
  7. Candidate should have a positive outlook on life and its potential for good. (Highly Desirable)
  8. Candidate should have a clear affiliation with a church. (Highly Desirable)

Amelia Masonic Lodge #101 Scholarship

Scholarship Amount - $500

Criteria:

  1. Accepted to a 4-year college or university, or technical school.
  2. Financial need.
  3. Selected by a scholarship committee consisting of teachers, a counselor and an administrator.
  4. Related to a mason is preferred but is not mandated.

61st Legislative District Scholarship

Scholarship Amount - $250

Criteria:

  1. The applicant’s parents or guardians must have established Virginia residency by having paid state income taxes for at least the preceding year.
  2. The applicant must be a resident in the 61st Legislative District and be a graduating senior.
  3. The applicant must have a 3.0 or better scholastic average.
  4. The applicant must have a transcript and a letter of reference from a teacher or counselor mailed to the chair person of the scholarship committee.
  5. The recipient must have been accepted to and must matriculate in a Virginia college or university.

John Fariss IV Memorial Agricultural Scholarship

Scholarship Amount – Varies – 1 scholarship awarded in 2017 for $400

Criteria:

  1. Student planning to pursue a career in the agricultural or technical field.
  2. Student planning to attend a 2 or 4-year post-secondary institution.
  3. Student who has taken at least two years of agriculture during their highschool career and has maintained at least a B average.
  4. Student has no suspensions their senior year.

Olivia Booker Scholarship

Scholarship Amount- $500

Criteria:

  1. Accepted to a 4-year college or university.
  2. Pursuing a degree in the medical field.
  3. GPA of a 2.5.
  4. Submit a brief essay explaining interest and goals in your chosen area of medicine.

Johnny F. Black Scholarship

Scholarship Amount – $500

Criteria:

  1. Candidate must be planning to attend a 2 or 4-year college or university or a trade/technical school.
  2. Clear financial need.
  3. Candidate should have the highest moral character and integrity.
  4. Candidate should have appositive reputation in behavior and attitude.

Granville P. Meade Scholarship

Provides financial assistance to students in Virginia who have achieved academically, but who are financially unable to attend college.

Scholarship Amount - $2000 per year for four years

Robert E. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund

Available to seniors in our region who have been accepted to a 2 or 4-year college or university. An essay is required.

Piedmont Soil and Water Scholarship

This is a scholarship available to a student in our region majoring in a curriculum related to Natural Resource Conservation or Environmental Studies.

Scholarship Amount - $1000

Terrapin Neck Grange #932 (Ronnie Jenkins Memorial Scholarship,

James L. Hamner, Jr. Memorial Scholarship)

Scholarship Amount - $250.00 – 3 awarded in 2017

Criteria:

  1. Accepted to a 4-year college or university, or technical school.
  2. Financial need.
  3. Selected by a scholarship committee consisting of teachers, a counselor and an administrator.
  4. Grade Point Average of at least a 2.5.

VFW Amelia Post 8759 Scholarship

This scholarship is to honor the men and women who served this country. Some paid the ultimate sacrifice by dying for the freedoms we as a nation enjoy every day.

Scholarship Amount - $500.00 – In 2017, four scholarships awarded

Criteria:

  1. Planning to attend an institution of higher learning next school year
  2. Financial Need.
  3. Candidate should have the highest moral character and integrity.
  4. Candidate should have a positive reputation in behavior and attitude.

American Legion Amelia Post 87 Scholarship

This scholarship is to honor the men and women who served this country. Some paid the ultimate sacrifice by dying for the freedoms we as a nation enjoy every day.

Scholarship Amount - $500.00

Criteria:

  1. Planning to attend an institution of higher learning next school year.
  2. Financial Need.
  3. Candidate should have the highest moral character and integrity.
  4. Candidate should have a positive reputation in behavior and attitude.

Bernice P. Hill Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory and honor of Bernice P. Hill in 2015.

Scholarship Amount - varies

Criteria:

  1. Planning to attend an institution of higher learning next school year.

Amelia County Farm Bureau Four Year Agriculture Scholarship

This scholarship is available to high school seniors preparing to enroll in their first year of a four year agriculture program. A copy of an acceptance letter into four year agricultural program must be included with scholarship application.

Criteria:

  1. Student or parent must be a member of Farm Bureau.

Edna Smith Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a future educator or entrepreneur.

Scholarship Amount – varies

Criteria:

  1. 3.25 GPA.
  2. Plan to attend a 4-year college or university.
  3. Major in education.
  4. Financial need.
  5. Essay required.

Sawyer Holden Clemmer McKinley Scholarship Application

This scholarship was established by the McKinley family in memory of their son Sawyer in 2016. It is a one-time award.

Scholarship Amount - $1000

Criteria:

  1. 3.75 GPA
  2. Plan to attend a 4-year college or university.
  3. No disciplinary actions on their record
  4. Must currently belong to either National Honors Society or Beta Club

Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarship

Scholarship Amount - $500
Criteria:

  1. Applicant must be female
  2. 3.0 GPA or better

Southside Opportunity Fund Scholarship

Scholarship Amount - $1000

Criteria:

1. Applicant’s primary residence must receive its electric power from Southside Electric Cooperative.

2. Applicant must be a high school senior graduating in 2018.

3. Applicant must be entering his or her first semester at a college or technical/trade school in the fall of 2017. Proof of admission will be required if selected to receive a scholarship.

Amelia Ruritan Scholarship
