Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Training

Setting Youth and Families Up to Succeed by Recognizing
Neurocognitive Impairments such as FASD and Modifying Approaches

Featuring Presenter: Daniel Dubovsky

This training addresses the importance of recognizing an FASD or other neurocognitive issues in those with whom we work or live. The brain damage seen in FASD is examined in relation to why and how to modify approaches, along with common behaviors that result from this damage and that may result in misdiagnoses such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder, and Bipolar Disorder in the individual and neglect and sabotaging treatment in family members. Strategies for improving outcomes for the children/youth, family, and agencies and systems that serve them are highlighted.
Participants will be able to:
·  Describe structures of the brain that are commonly affected in children and youth with an FASD;
·  Discuss how viewing FASD as co-occurring with other disorders is different than the general view of addressing co-occurring disorders;
·  List strategies to improve outcomes for children/youth with an FASD and their families.
