Summary

The School Health Service leads delivers and evaluates preventative services and the Universal Health Child Programme within both school and community settings, The School Health Service is a universal service which also intensifies its delivery for children and young people who have more complex and longer term needs.

The School Health Team provides a universal service with open access for any child or young person aged 5 to 19 attending education provision within East Sussex, and for East Sussex residents either receiving home education or not currently in any educational provision

What the service does

  • Provides health assessment at school entry in reception/year 1 (4/5 yrs)
  • Leads, deliver and evaluate preventative services and universal public health programmes (as set out in the HCP 5-19) for school-aged children and young people, within both school and community settings
  • Routinely offers height and weight screening as part of the National Childhood Measurement Programme (NCMP) in Reception year and year 6
  • Offers advice support and sign posting to children young people and carers on a range of public health issues
  • Leads support for children and young people who have complex and/or additional needs including support, education and training for families, carers and school staff
  • Provides as a minimum a weekly drop in service in all targeted secondary schools in East Sussex, offering children and young people the opportunity to discuss any health related issues;
  • Provides a tier one sexual health services in schools to help schools reduce teenage conception rates and sexually transmitted infections (STI) to include:
  • Has a key public health role in working with schools to produce a school health needs assessment and a School Health Improvement Plan for every school
  • Work closely with partner agencies and other key health providers to ensure a multi-agency approach

Location and coverage

The School Health Team provides a universal service with open access for any child or young person aged 5 to 19 attending education provision within East Sussex, and for East Sussex residents either receiving home education or not currently in any educational provision.

The service is arranged in three teams aligned to Clinical Commissioning Group areas

Who does the service provide for?

The School health Service provides packages of care to meet school health needs where the school health team is the most appropriate professional. The service will refer or signpost to other services where appropriate.

Self-referral is available

If a professional is referring a referral form should be completed with parental consent. Referral forms are available from the contact details above

How will you review how things are going?

A package of care is up to 6 sessions after which it will be reviewed and onward referrals made if appropriate

Drop in clinics in secondary schools can be accessed by young people as often as they wish

Accessibility

The service is available in a range of locations including schools and children’s centres. We will advise on accessibility when booking an appointment
