BENJAMIN BAGANO

Johnson BANTOG BARTOLOME GUZMAN

June 1, 1995 to May 31, 1998

1. President was the calling of municipal executive’s since1904 to 1937. Mayor is the calling

thereafter to the present.

2. The term of Ventura Lanas and Emiliano Batane was interrupted by the Japanese occupation

of Besao. Both refused to serve during said occupation, but resumed when Besao was liberated.

3. To fill the gap of leadership in Besao during the Japanese occupation, Dr. Hillary Clap, then

provincial governor of the old Mt. Province, persistently requested Mr. Rodolfo Hidalgo Kawi

to sacrifice himself and face the situation, reassuring among others, to save the town and its

people, reluctantly, Mr. Hidalgo Kawi accepted the risky position. Incidentally, the practical

philosophy of Dr. Clap came to pass. Besao and its people were never molested unlike

other places, although there was a Japanese garrison in Kin-way. This was so because of the

leadership of Mr. Hidalgo Kawi who was able to handle the situation. Inspite of the good works and

sacrifices of Mr. Hidalgo Kawi and Dr. Clap, they were liquidated by the guerrilla unit of the

121st. Infantry without the benefit of a court hearing.

4. During the November, 1952 elections for the January 1, 1953 to December 31, 1953 terms,

candidate Felipe Lalwet won but candidate Domeyeg protested. Due to the popularity of

Domeyeg in the Provincial Board in Bontoc, he was able to bargain for half of the term.

He served the first half and Lalwet served the second half.

5. Likewise in the November 1959 elections for the January 1, 1960 to December 31, 1963 term,

candidate Vicente Bugnosen and candidate Rodolfo Dampo had tie votes. To resolve the

said tie votes; draw-lot was held in accordance with law. Bugnosen was favored by the

draw-lot. He began to serve in April 9, 1960. Meanwhile candidate Dampo filed his protest

and won, but he received the decision less than two months before the end of the term

and period of filing candidacy for the then coming election, so instead of assuming office,

he filed his candidacy and won.

6. During the May, 1995 election fro the June 1, 1995 to May 31, 1998 term, candidate

Johnson Bantog won and proclaimed, but candidate Angel Lumpias protested. The case is pending as

of this writing. (September, 1996)

THE COMING OF GALELED

History tells us that sometimes in 1574, LIMAHONG, a Chinese adventurer outlawed by the

Manchu Government sneaks his way to the Philippines shores in search for fortune.

After his futile attempt to conquer Manila, he established his kingdom at the mouth of the

Agno River in Pangasinan. However, the Spanish conquistadors drove him from his stronghold.

He escaped to Apari through the Ilocos coast.

In his escape, one of his trusted lieutenants begged to stay. He won his bargain with

Limahong and was allowed to find his way through the rugged jungles of the Cordillera range. He

reached Ambagew, and settled there. Limahong's trusted lieutenant was Bai Sao a Mongolian.

He dreamed of going back to his native China but he never returned. He died a happy man

at the slopes of Mt. Sisipitan, where Ambagew stand.

Bai Sao is an ancestor of a man named Docyogen, who later on become Galeled. The name

Galeled implies strength - one, that was swift like the birds; wild and brave as the roving untamed animal. (Legend)

Galeled was blessed with 6 children; one of them was Bestaga who married a beautiful damsel

in Besao and begot 7 children. These 7 children of Bestaga grew in number and almost half of the

Populations of Besao are descendants from Galeled. Many of Galeled's descendants immigrated to the United State of America and Canada.

The other 5 children of Galeled who married in Agawa likewise flourished and begot many

Children and grandchildren. Many are in Kinali, Quirino, and Ilocos Sur, some in Tadian, Lipay La Union and Candon, Ilocos Sur.

Many of Galeled's descendants became prominent politicians. Rodolfo Hidalgo Kawi the only

Igorot to graduate from the University of Ann Arbor Michigan, became congressman of the

old Mt. Province during the Commonwealth Era. Abundio who is Rodolfo Kawi's elder brother became

Mayor of Besao for 3 consecutive terms before the Second World War, Domingo Busacay also became

Mayor of Besao after the lasts war, and his younger brother Isabelo Busacay, became mayor of Sagada

for 3 terms. Alfredo Agdaca and Arthur Calixto also became mayor. Alfredo (Binky) Lamen Jr.

became vice governor of the Mt. Province. Vicente (Julio) Bantog, became vice mayor of Besao, and

His nephew Johnson Bantog is now the incumbent mayor land Bartholome Guzman his vice-mayor.

The incumbent city mayor of Baguio City for his second term is Atty.Mauricio Domogan. Atty. Leonard Mayaen is the incumbent governor of the Mt. Province.

You will find a Galeled relative in almost every field of endeavor. There are educators, doctors,

Anthropologist, CPA's, Lawyers, engineers. Etc. There are also ranking officers in the Arm Forces of the

Philippines. Yes name it. Galeled has it and this is not the end. As generations come and go theGaleled clan goes on.
