Summer classes

  1. Working from the Clothed Model - Laurie Harden

This classworks from the clothed figure. Learn how to hone your skills at drawing and painting from life, one of the best ways to learn proportion, anatomy, value and gesture. Each session will have a number of short gesture poses working up to longer sittings. What to bring: Continuing students bring their own supplies. Beginners bring all purpose medium-size pad; 2 charcoal pencils 6B & 4B soft Vine Charcoal; 3 Graphite pencils B,2B & 4B. Instructor may give further painting requirements.$70 Member; $80 non-member. Model Fee $35.

2. 3. Oils, Pastels, Acrylics and Drawing– Alex Piccirillo (Monday) - Christina Debarry (Tuesday)

Discover and develop your artistic gifts in painting and drawing. Explore basic skills of composition and design in addition to color relationships using oil, pastel or acrylic paints. Students will develop personal vision and expression through still life set-ups, preferably of one’s own choosing, working from photographs and other reference material.

What to bring: Continuing students bring their own supplies. Beginners bring all purpose pad, 2 charcoal pencils 6B & 4B soft vine charcoal, 3 graphite pencils 1B, 2B & 4B, kneaded eraser.$70 member; $80 non-member.

4.&5. Watercolor Techniques– Mark De Mos

Watercolor studies exploring techniques in the use of color, value, intensity and texture. Exploration with emphasis on wet into wet, dry brushing, washes, masking out, composition and value. What to bring: Continuing Students bring their own supplies. Beginners call 973-992-7749 or 973-422-0024.$70 member; $80 non-member.

6. Pastel – Christina Debarry

This course is an extension of our yearly offering on the traditional techniques of using pastels. Learn about various types of pastels, different strokes, i.e. cross-hatching etc. in their role in the application of a finished painting, color theory, design are stressed. Technical aspects will be demonstrated in addition to lectures on this medium. What to bring: Continuing students bring their own supplies. Beginners bring Canson 5 sheets medium value of gray or tan; board to hold sheets such as Foam Core or Masonite to accommodate at least a half sheet; vine charcoal-Medium and Nu Pastel of 96 colors.

$70 member; $80 non-member.

7. Oils, Pastels and Drawing– Color, Composition and Design – Christina DeBarry

This course is designed for learning not only about traditional techniques of using your paints, but also presents an in-depth study of the elements which make a painting effective. Technical aspects will be demonstrated in addition to lectures on all aspects of a specific medium. What to bring: Continuing students bring their own supplies as well as non-beginners. About our Teachers:

Laurie Hardenhas a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design, is a free-lance illustrator. Her paintings are in many private collections, and her illustrations appear in Harper Collines, Ladies Home Journal, Redbook, etc.

Alex Piccirillo has been designated as a Master Pastellist by the Pastel Society of America. He is also a faculty member of the Montclair Art Museum, the Paterson Museum, and the Hammond Museum. His work has been exhibited in many prestigious locales.

Mark De Mos is an elected member of the New Jersey Watercolor Society, Signature Member of Northeast Watercolor Society and Garden State and Baltimore Watercolor Societies. He was the first president of the New Jersey Pastel Society. His work has been published and reviewed.

Christina Debarry is the Pastel Society of America President Emeritus, elected full member and Vice President of Allied Artists of America, full member of the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, Audobon Artists and Fellow of American Artists Professional League. She is listed in Who’s who in American Art.

Livingston Arts Association reserves the right to cancel a particular class if there is not enough subscription. Those registering should sign up for the entire session.
