Goals:

  • To understand the historical concept of biblical anointing.
  • To grasp the importance of the Holy Spirit's ongoing anointing in our lives today.

Notes:

  1. Objects and purposes of anointing in the Bible:
  • I Kings 19:9-16: Prophets were anointed to be able to proclaim God's word.
  • Exodus 40:12-15: Priests were anointed to carry out their duties of worship and sacrifice.
  • I Samuel 16:1,8-13: Kings were anointed so they could rule.
  • Mark 6:7-13: People were anointed for healing.
  • Leviticus 8:10-13: Objects were anointed so they could be set aside for holy use.
  • Luke 4:16-20: Jesus was anointed to be prepared for ministry.
  • Acts 10:38: Jesus was anointed to be prepared for ministry.
  • Acts 1:8: The disciples (and we) are anointed to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.
  1. Traditional purposes of anointing: for proclaiming, for worship, for sacrifice, for ruling, for healing, and to make something ready for holy use.
  1. Visible signs of God's anointing: confidence, competence, power, calmness. Sign of "yesterday's anointing": fatigue.
  1. Hosea 10:12: Essential components to receiving a new anointing:
  • Prayer: "Plant the good seeds of righteousness"
  • Humility and confession: "Plow up the hard ground of your heart"
  • Repentance and discipleship: "Seek the Lord"
