Literature Review about Light-Driven Material

Objective

Our ultimate goal is to create a fiber-optic microgripper using light-driven material with smooth and precise force control. In this literature research, the purpose is to find the appropriate light-driven material.

Requirements

1. All the findings are based on the currently published literatures or commercial available products. Commercial available products are preferred.

2.Write a literature review report or paper with well formatted publication style (including title, authors, abstract, keywords, introduction, main body, conclusion, references, and appendix if needed).

3. Submit a folder including all the referred publications/datasheets and an ENDNOTE reference library file. The files should be properly named with YEAR and TITLE information.

Description

The final fiber-optic microgripper is as shown in Fig. 1. The light-driven material will work as the gripper arms or puller connected to the gripper arms. When light is guided through the fiber to the material, the shape of the material will mechanically change so that the gripper can close/open to hold/release the object.

Briefly speaking, the technical requirements to the light-driven material are:

1. The basic function of the light-driven material is its shape can change when light shines on it.

2. The shape deformation can be anyway such as bending, elongation, and so on.

3.The process can be reversed by tuning the light properties such as intensity, wavelength, polarization, and so on.

4. The light-driven material can be anyone such as elastomeric and glassy liquid crystal polymer (LCP), Shape-memory alloy (SMA), and so on. Please find as many as possible candidates that could be applied for this application.

5. Many properties of the material related to this application should be concerned and compared clearly in tables, such as strain per weight, response time, and so on.

Hints

1. Read this document until you completely understand, then start to search some keywords appeared in this document. After you find some related works, you can track their references and other works which cite them.

2. Well organize your searched files and products, and well prepare your ENDNOTE library. Then you can easily cite them when you are writing. If your writing is complete and logical, it is promising to be published as a journal paper.

3.Following are some example publications, in which the materials are possible for this application. Please have a look at them, and try to explore more.
