Dear Parents/Guardians

Literacy Events for Year 7 and 8

As the Reader in Residence at the Forest School Library, I would like to share with you some on- going and new events taking place at the Library for Year 7 and 8 pupils. All events are FREE and are designed to establish literacy and a lifelong love of reading for pleasure.

Weekly Clubs

Year 7 Set for Life – a lunch-time club that encourages creativity. (Monday 1:25-2pm in the Library)

Year 7 and 8 Reading Group – discusses the latest teen fiction. (Thursdays 1:25-2pm in the Library)

Year 7 and 8 Writing Club – designed to encourage literacy. (Mondays 3:10-4:10pm in the Library).

Homework Clinic – every Monday after school until 4pm. (Mondays 3:10-4pm in the Library)

In addition, there are a number of competitions starting in 2017 where boys can win literacy commendations, vouchers and even a Kindle Fire.

Competitions

Creative Writing - to find the best creative fiction piece on the theme of inventions – open to all years.

Debating– open to years 7 and 8 and the best form wins a trophy.

Forest Reading Championship - the more books you read the more commendations you earn.

Spelling Bee – starting in May, a chance to win a trophy in this ever popular spelling competition – Year 7 only.

For parents, on World Book Day, (2nd March 2017) I will be holding a literacy evening in the library during the Year 7 parents’ evening. This is an opportunity to find out more about how to get your son reading, to collect the most up-to-date teen fiction reading list and to browse the latest stock. We also have reading lists available on the school website.

I hope you find something of interest here and will encourage your son to participate in one or more of our clubs and competitions. It is an excellent way to improve literacy, have fun and win prizes, picking up lots of commendations along the way.

Yours sincerely

Sarah Kennedy
