MR. MARTIN'S MESSAGE
First Student Video Podcast
This week I’m proud to present our first student video podcast. Congratulations goes out to Olivia, Joel, and Alida for being brave enough to be our first students to get in front of the camera and pave the way for future videos. I look forward to working with different groups of students this year to create these podcasts and share them with you as often as possible. Being our first, this video is fairly short and simple, and updates you on upcoming school events, important announcements, and a fun joke. In future videos, we hope to spotlight some of the cool things happening on campus and allow students to do feature stories empowering them to share their voice. I feel this really fits into our mission to provide a caring, connected environment where all students are empowered to develop independence and compassion through learning that inspires. If you are inspired to volunteer and help support students create video podcasts then please let me know. Enjoy!

The California Young Reader Medal 2017
Right about this time of year the kids are “buzzing” about the new California Young Reader Medal nominees. January marks the start for the 1st-6thgraders to gear up and start reading the CYRM books. Once we have read all the nominees, students will be asked to vote for their favorite book. As soon as the ballots have been cast, I will send our schools’ selection to the District level and then they will send our votes to the State. It’s all very exciting to see if the books that received the most votes from our school end up winning the CYRM Award!
The CYRM program encourages recreational reading of popular literature among the young people of California. Members of the committee read the suggested books, discuss their merits and appeal to children, and then decide upon a well-balanced list of nominees.
The CYRM nominees for this year are:
PRIMARY CATEGORY (Grades K-3rd)

PICTURE BOOKS FOR OLDER READERS (Grades 4th-6th)
