ST JOHN BOSCO CRICKET CLUB

NEWSLETTER Round 1

SEASON 2013-14

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

With Round 1 over and correct weight semaphored, I would again like to welcome all of our new players, coaches/managers and parents. And welcome back our no-so-new families. I’m sure you are all going to enjoy the season as we follow our kids exploits and watch them develop as the weeks pass.

Round 1 saw our players produce some terrific results, with 5 of our 8 teams recording wins, and 2 of the other 3 teams falling only 6 and 7 runs short in their respective games. Well done to everyone on such a great start to the new season.

Already we’ve had some great individual performances that you can follow by looking on the SSJCA cricket-online website, clicking on Honour Board and seeing these top efforts, which no doubt will be included in the match reports (HINT,HINT!!)

The main thing is that everyone is enjoying their cricket and the friendships that are forged through their cricket. Also that we are learning to improve our skills as the season progresses and each training session is completed.

Remember kids, you aren’t going to improve your cricket if you don’t listen to your coaches at training. And it’s not fair on your team-mates if you misbehave and distract them. They shouldn’t have to miss out on hearing or seeing the coach because you are distracting them. Have fun but make sure you are on your best learning behaviour, and listen with your ears and NOT your mouths.

We still have room for more players in most grades, so if you have a friendor neighbour who may like to play, please contact us. It’s not too late to sign up.

Milo in2 cricket will commence on Friday 11th October, so if you have any younger siblings (boys or girls) who wish to learn the basic skills of cricket in a fun environment, this is what you need. The flyers and notices will be distributed shortly. Registrations will be held on Friday October 11 at Boys Town Oval on the Banksia Rd side of the fields. More info shortly.

We can all look forward to Round 2 after the school break, so we hope everybody returns fit and well and as keen as ever. Enjoy the break and we’ll catch up in October.

Yours on a sticky wicket..... still.

REGISTRATIONS

Things did not turn out well this year with us not being able to submit an U16 team. We had 7 players interested in playing but could not convince any other players to join early enough so we gradually lost players to other clubs. We have struggled a bit in U14 and still could do with a couple more. We eventually got an U12 team on deck and on a brighter note we have 3 U10s and 2 U8 teams so hopefully things will be better into the future.

If you know of anyone interested or you can twist the arm of some friends then we could still do with players in all grades.

MENS REGISTRATIONS

We are now down to 3 teams this year after peaking in 2011 with 6. Seems there are too many other things to do and people seem to be unhappy with the type of cricket being scheduled. More one dayers and 20/20 they say.

Please contact Mitch Worsley (95421028) or the other mens delegates for enquiries.

These people will need all the assistance we can give them during the year as they are all volunteers giving of their time.

You do not need any qualifications to be a manager or help with scoring but the Sutherland Shire Junior Cricket Association requires that all club coaches from U10 to U16 have attended a coaching accreditation course.

For level 1 this is a web based tutorial followed by a face to face course of a very intensive 2 nights. The accreditation is valid for 3 years and is renewed by the club. All costs of the course are borne by the club.

PLAYING DRESS

The Club plays in a coloured shirt which commenced 5 seasons ago and these shirts are available for sale at $25.00 ea. Every child must wear one to play. We also have club hats at $15.00 The baggy caps have become an expensive item and are$45.00 all up so we may need to take orders as we don’t stock too many.

Whites/creams are mandatory including jumpers or Sloppy Joes. Baseball caps are not approved clothing. Runners must be predominately white.

Start thinking about what you might need and advise your coach during training.

COACHING CLINICS

We will again endeavour to run special coaching clinics for the U10’s and maybe U12’s during the season. We will try and work this in with Cricket NSW. More details when they are to hand.

SPONSORSHIP

A general thank you to all our sponsors for 2012-13 season as without you we would not be able to meet our cost commitments. Our wholehearted thanks go out to them and may they support us for years to come. So get behind them for the good of our club.

Many years ago sponsorship was unheard of at our club but gradually over the last few years we would never have met the rising costs of running the club without the involvement of sponsors. It is hard for a club such as ours with limited membership and playing numbers to offer our sponsors a great deal for their money. We only ask that you the parents and the heart of our club support our sponsors wherever possible.

A club can’t run effectively without sponsorship and we are no different to any other club. The Sponsor’s dollars go to renewing the kits and equipment that is necessary to give your kids the best opportunity to play and train for cricket. So I offer our Sponsors a sincere thank you for your support and hope you continue with us next season. These Sponsors appear in our newsletter after each match, please support them as their dollars support your kids.

MILO in2CRICKET

We will again be organising the program for youngsters interested in a skills development program that runs as a separate program to the actual cricket competition. There wasn’t enough support last year to run this but there is already some interest around so hopefully we can do it this year.

Whilst we have organised games for U8’s and U10’s, some of our players in these age groups also benefit greatly from the skills development that the program offers. We would also urge players from 6yrs up to register in our U8 competition as we put the younger members together and usually play against teams of similar age and ability.

The MILO in2Cricket sessions will commence Friday 11th October on Boys Town oval near the nets and run for approx 10 weeks tonear Xmas. The cost of this has not been set by Cricket NSW yet but anticipated to be around $65. There will be special promotional packs and giveaways for the participants and regular skills development programs usually Friday afternoon but this is yet to be confirmed. Further information will be available the closer we get to the start of the program but you can register on the normal club registration day. More info can be obtained from the Cricket NSW website or our Coordinator Mark Piper. If you know of anyone interested have them contact us.

CLUB COMMUNICATIONS

The clubs website is . Please make a special of note of this as it changed since the start of last season and you will need to change your browser search. We keep this site up to date with all club information, contacts and events that all members should be aware of. We welcome your comments and suggestions on what should be contained there and hope we can develop it further as time goes by. A full list of our sponsors can be seen there with relevant links to their websites where supplied and we encourage you to visit these sites.

There is also the competition website which contains all the club registration details and will provide access to all club members to view results and competition tables and team statistics for both Juniors and Mens competitions. The coaches and managers and committee have special access to team details and statistics but the general public can access match results.

This is also used to send emails to families so it is important to supply your up to date email contact details when you register. I wholeheartedly recommend the use of this site as it provides everything you need to know about the season. It is essential that you make yourself aware (coaches and managers especially) of the rules of the game and the Administrative regulations. They are all downloadable from the website. The teams, draw and results for the Men’s competition are also located on this website.

The Association’s web site is

Match Reports for Round 1

Juniors

14C v St Patricks 3

St John Bosco 1 135 (Josh 38, Jayden 33, Liam 11, Matt 10) lost to St Patricks 3* 4/141 (James 1/11, Connor L 1/11, Jonah 1/18, Andrew 1/18)

14D v Engadine 4

St John Bosco 2 8/78 (Ryan 21, Patrick 13, Declan 10) & 5/41 (Ryan 12no) lost to Engadine 4* 8/184 (Declan 4/13, Jack 2/31, Elliot 1/22, Addison 1/33)

Captain Addison Healy won the toss and elected to bowl.

Great start to the game with a `Platinum duck` or `Golden Goose` (first competition ball bowled duck) by our opener Declan Moroney. Some early wickets and we were looking the goods. Engadine Dragons were approx 3/56 after 22 overs and in reply we are 5/64 off 22 overs. Pat Cordina and Ryan Forrest were electric as openers. Going great guns until about the 12 over. Minor collapse but we were still in the game. Playing the competition with only 9 players so the hunt is on for two others.

DAY 2. The boys batted out only 32 overs this round so they will have to be patient to stretch teams over 50 overs if they want to compete. Some highlights include Ryan (21), Pat (13) and Deck (10) in the runs. In the bowling department Declan starred with 4/13 off 8 overs, Jack Carey with 2/31 off 6 overs, both Addison and Elliot a wicket each. On the downside, we have to watch our sundries if we are to win any matches. Keep up the enthusiasm boys your travelling well.
