PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The 2008/2009 year has certainly been a challenging one for the Hutt Valley Association and the management committee with a number of large scale initiatives to be considered and underway.

At a national level we continue to carefully negotiate with Tennis New Zealand on our association with and participation in the new national and Tennis Central Region structure, having consideration for the responsibility we have to our clubs and the local tennis community.

It would be fair to say that Tennis Central Region is still work through its organisational structure and provision of services to the wider region, but already we are seeing the development and delivery of new initiatives across the region. Two aims have been to provide players and clubs with new tools, and to focus on programmes that encourage different groups to take up tennis as a sport.

The paramount issue this year for the management committee has been the renewal of the Mitchell Park complex. With the combined efforts of both the Mitchell Park Trustees and the HVT management committee and local tennis clubs, we have been successful in obtaining significant grants from both the Hutt City Council and the community trusts (Pelorus, Lion Foundation, New Zealand Community Trust, and Pub Charity) towards this project that will allow us to replace the majority of the artificial grass courts in the coming months. I would like to thank the Hutt City Council and staff for their help and cooperation in this endeavour, when approached for advice on the project. Although acknowledging people by name risks leaving out the many other people who have contributed to the project I would like acknowledgement the Trustees; David Basset, Barry Shute, Warwick Wyatt; the Management Committee; Ross Bisley, Joe Glover, Ian Miller, Les Stewart, Dick Werry and Barry Yandle; and Tony Gambitsis, from Squash and others such as Brendon Smith who have laid the foundation of our success through early liaise with HCC and other groups. Thank you to organisations such as Apex Print who helped us prepare the submission presented to HCC. Apologies to anyone I have overlook who has contributed to this project.

The new season will no doubt bring new challenges for the committee and I can only encourage you as HVT clubs to be as involved as possible in building a bigger and stronger tennis community. One avenue for this is for all clubs to contribute members to the HVT management committee.

Trustees

Our Association is overseen by a group of guardians (“Trustees”) who are responsible to ensure that the management committee acts in a responsible manner and in the best interests of the sport and the community at large.

Thank you to the trustees who have provided their advice and guidance when required throughout the season.

Complex Manager

Ora Whaanga, is departing and heading to Australia, her last day being 31 July. I would like to thank Ora for her hard work over the years she has been with HVT. Her commitment and passion for the sport is great and she has made the ProShop very successful in the last few years.

A sincere thank you to all the sponsors of Hutt Valley Tennis and its activities, your support is great appreciated.

I look forward to your continued association over the coming seasons.

A sincere thank you to all those volunteers who have freely given their time and assistance to Hutt Valley Tennis throughout the season.

To all members I hope you all enjoyed your tennis during the season and look forward to seeing you all in coming season.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2008/9

Clubs & Members

Thanks for the support during a year where playing conditions at Mitchell Park have been pretty poor. Without renovations of the courts for next season, I think we would need to close courts for safety reasons. Thanks for your agreement last year at the AGM to increase the development levy.

Membership at 1261 (543 seniors and 718 juniors) is 130 less than last year, though structural changes, moving young juniors to coaching only at one club accounted for a reduction of 70.

The philosophy of the HVTA has been one of volunteers working with volunteers, thank you to everyone who supports tennis in your many roles, long may your energy, effort, support and involvement continue.

We wish you many years of enjoyable tennis at great facilities.

Coaches

Thanks to our resident coaches Swartz school of tennis, you add a vitality to Mitchell Park. I would like to thank all the coaches in the HuttValley, your passion to develop our players is a key role in the development of both the numbers and quality of players. I would like to see more collaboration amongst coaches, to meet players and potential players varied needs.

Development Committee

We are really pleased that at the end of this financial year and beginning of the new year, we have been able to secure sufficient funding to renovate the back two bays, courts 5-13. Particular thanks to Hutt City Council, ($200k), Pub Charity ($50k), Pelorus Trust ($50k), and NZCT ($50k). Lion Foundation has also contributed $7,663 towards the deck repairs. This also allows renovation of the pavilion to start.

A contract has been let to Bachlerdeck and work will start with the back bays as soon as a period of calm weather is available. I would particularly like to thank the many people who participated in the pulling together of the submissions and their presentations. In particular - Councilors David Bassett, Deborah Hislop, Margaret Cousins, Trustees Barrie Shute and Warwick Wyatt, Development committee members Joe Glover and Dick Werry. Support has been very helpful from Squash, Tony Gambitsis, and the HVT management committee, Wayne Dahlberg, Barry Yandle, Les Stewart, Joe Glover, Dick Werry, Brian Haymes, Ross Bisley & Peter Calder.

Management Committee

I would like to thank all the members of the Management Committee. We have welcomed Joe Glover during the year who has helped with facilities development in particular. Peter Calder has been co-opted as the Association Junior Convenor, a role not to be underestimated with over 80 junior interclub teams, 4 tournaments a year held at Mitchell Park, and many events co-ordinated with other associations in the region. John Horrocks has recently been co-opted to assist with the renovation work.

I would particularly like to thank Barry Yandle for his support as secretary during the year, Unfortunately Barry’s commitments do not allow him to continue as secretary, but he has kindly offered to continue to deal with HVTA constitution changes, which is no small job. Thanks Barry. Paddy Wells has been co-opted and stands for election as the new secretary.

Thanks Ross Bisley for your work as treasurer, and we very much appreciate you standing for re-election.

Thanks Brian Haymes for the many days spent on the days and in preparation for junior tournaments. We wish you well with your move to Tauranga.

We are keen to see the Association engage more with the members through communication and social events and are seeking assistance with this role, particularly web development. With the renovations, we would like to have a Sponsorship role on the committee. All volunteers make a difference you are urged to join or let us know what activities interest you. The improved facilities should help us be well positioned to develop tennis in the HuttValley. I urge any of you who are interested in sponsoring facilities or events, or have contacts who are interested, to let me know. With over 1200 tennis members this can be an effective marketing tool for sponsors.

Trustees

The trustees have been strongly engaged and supportive during the fundraising submissions their guidance has been essential for a new boy like myself.

Barrie Shute, Warwick Wyatt and Warwick Stoupe have been through this before they along with David Bassett are as passionate about the facilities as we all are. Barrie is giving much time going forward on the court renovations, and Warwick on the pavilion renovations. All ensuring that we are obtaining value for money in all areas.

Executive Committee

Towards the end of the year the Executive committee meets on a monthly basis prior to the management committee, this avoids duplication of discussions, and encourages co-ordination. With the submissions to HCC, the planned pavilion renovations and the Complex manager tender this has been particularly helpful. Thanks to Tony Gambitsis, Tony Stallinger and Paul Barnett.

Complex Manager

Thanks Ora for your work during the 2008/9 season, we wish you good luck in your future on the Gold Coast.

Chuck & Mariska, welcome to the role we look forward to working together to grow the use of the facilities and make Mitchell Park the thriving centre it once was.

Tennis NZ and Tennis Central

Thanks for your support, whilst grappling with the constitutional issues is a time consuming exercise, we have spent more time focusing on the co-ordination of activities which is working well with Jen Burridge focusing on the juniors. Thanks to Charlie Cordwell both in his development role and his new role as Tennis Central CEO. I am sure that Katie ….. will bring some new ideas to club development.

COMPLEX MANAGER REPORT 2008/9

Over the last 5 Years the financial profit continued to grow and now it is double previous financial years. Refer Analysis….

I leave here satisfied that I have done everything to assist Hutt Valley Tennis and Mitchell Park Squash develop a bigger and better facility for the future. 2004 to 2009

Business House Tennis:

This year I have developed a further increase in Business House teams and friends that are not affiliated to a clubs. Refer Analysis…. The new teams are: Civil Aviation Association, Open Polytechnic, Fosters Fury, Moving On, Professionals, Transfield services, Bahco boys, edi Downers, LTM and Foreigners etc. I need to thank those regulars who participate all year round, John Geriatrics, RSB, Walton’s Wanderers, The 4 Stubies, The Soaks, KGB, Exoset, Young Dental, HRD1, Bainimarama and Kelly’s Jewellery’s.

With extra teams wanting to play in the summer competition I went back to the 3 person format on the Wednesday. It was fairly evidence that the 4 person format was most popular. It is pleasing to note that our Wednesday league produced a mixture of winners, while our Thursday league was dominated by HRD1 this year.

Business House is been very successful, and brings in a profit for the Complex. The only complaint has been the standard of our court surfaces and this is currently being addressed.

Tennis Court Hire age:

There has been slow, growth over the last 5 years. Court rental is profitable but there is a lot more scope to further increase the usage of the courts and I’m sure this will happen once the refurnishing is done.

Court rental is up again on previous years, assisted by the return of hockey from June to Sept. Our coaches the Swartz’s have kept a steady flow of income with Jason Kane and Gary Nelson’s Periodic utilization. We have corporate membership Stratex Network, Raphael House and private hire. This year Glen Iris rented our courts for Club Champs and some interclub games. It would be great to see their club utilize Mitchell Park complex on a regular basics.

We need to thank Deanne Paki for taking over Friday morning tennis from Murray Hodgson who has been running this competition for more than 16 years. I would like to thank Murray who quietly works on maintaining our court surfaces and for his contribution to HVT. A special thanks to Dick Werry for his diligence in the repairs required on our Astro turf.

Pro Shop:

The Mitchell Park Pro-shop is one of the largest racket shops in New Zealand.

I guarantee to better any prices and I encourage people to “TRY BEFORE YOU BUY”. I would like to see all Tennis and Squash members make the Mitchell Park Pro-shop their first port of call.

Pro Shop sales are very impressive with the best year ever. The contributing factor is the extended hours provided to cater for the events held here.

We need to thank all our club members, Coaches, Schools, Hockey, Rebels and Stirling Sports for promoting Mitchell Park Pro Shop.

The Complex:

The complex has an attractive outlook, bar, tennis and squash courts. Full shower facilities, a sauna, a sun bed, meeting room, kitchen and lounge area that cater for approx 120 people. These facilities are all available for hire be it for conferences,

21st weddings etc for a very small cost: I would like to see all Tennis and squash members promoting the Complex - be proactive and let your employers know about us.

Again this year the Community workers have been of value with keeping the ground maintenance around the complex to a minimum.

There are still areas within the complex that need seeing to, but these areas are currently being dealt with.

We need to thank our Plumber Woody, Tola and Brendon for their diligence with maintenance work required around the complex.

This is my final report as I leave for the Gold Coast. I wish HVT and Mitchell Park Squash sincere success in their renovations and upgrade to this awesome complex.

May this job be as rewarding for Mariska & Chuck as it was for me from 2004 to 2009

ASB BANK WELLINGTON REGIONAL INTERCLUB

The 2008/2009 summer interclub competition ended on a strong note this year.

The men’s competition saw the Anthony Adams Cup competed for by three Wellington Tennis Association teams and our own Lower Hutt Club team, with the emergence of Miramar Tennis club in the top four to challenge the dominance of Thorndon and Wellington clubs.

In the post Christmas Anthony Adams Cup, Miramar and Thorndon fought out their tie to a draw in the round robin, with Miramar finishing in first place and edging out Thorndon in the overall competition.

In the women’s competition the Katrina Mihaere Cup was competed for by Lower Hutt, Thorndon, TitahiBay and Wellington clubs. The Wellington Tennis Club team was a new and young team that made massive improvements during the season to see them in the top four teams competing for the Cup.
