Steps (For reference) / Key learning points
Suggested Activity 1: Experience sharing
1. Teacher explains to students the meaning of social service: helping the needy of our society or doing some work to improve the community life (such asthe environment, hygiene, education, public order, etc.). Bothfalls within the scope of social service.
2. Teacher invites students who have participated in social service to raise hands, and share their experience (such as the reasons for participating in social service; the most memorable experience; what they have learnt).
3. Teacher asks students who have no social service experience to write down anonymously the reasons for not participating. Teacher then collects them and reads out the reasons, and ask students who have participated in social service to share their thoughts and ways to deal with the difficulties encountered. (For example, if students cannot participate in social service because of too much homework, teachers may invite those who have participated to share their time management skills and the reasons for taking the time to participate in social service.) / To help other students understand the meaning and benefits of participating these activities through students’ sharing so as to encourage them to participate in social service.
Suggested Activity 2: “If I…”
1. Teacher distribute worksheet (Appendix 1), asking students what feelings and needs people may have in the following scenarios, and what they can do to help those people.
 You come to Hong Kong from the Mainland to live with your father. You become a stranger in the city, living without your mother.
 You aresick and you are going to stay in the hospital for a long time to receive treatment.
 Youare old with nobody to care about you or take care of you. / Enable students to putthemselves in others’ shoes, considering their feelings and needs, and what services they can provide for these people, thereby helping them understand the meaning of participating in social service and the contribution they can make.
Suggested Activity 3: It is more blessed to give than to receive – Voice of a volunteer
1. Teacher ask students to form groups of four to five, and then distribute “Voice of a volunteer”(Appendix 2). Students read before discussing the impact and benefits of participating in social service.
2. Teacherinvites two students to briefly describe the experiences of those two volunteers, including:
What service did the volunteer engage in?
What client did the volunteer serve?
How did the volunteer’s service help the client?
How and why did the volunteer change after participating in social service?
3. Teacher asks each group to take turns to share their members’ thoughts on the impact and benefits of participating in social service. / This activity enables students to understand the meaning and benefits of participating in social service through volunteers’ sharing of theirauthentic experiences and thoughts of volunteers, (people who actively participate in social service) so as to further encourage students to participate in social service, which willenhance their spirit of commitment and helping others, and make contributions to the community.

Conclusion (for reference):

1.Apart from taking care of ourselves,we,being part of the community, have the responsibility to help others and to make contributionsfor improvingour society.

2. Regardless ofage, sex, education, occupation, all people canparticipate in social service if they are willing to spend time anduphold the spirit of selflessness.

3.Participating in social service not only helps needy in the society, but also helps building a more caring and harmonious community.Through participation in social service, individuals may enrichtheir knowledge, enhance their resilience, boost their self-confidence and self-esteem, and make friends with like-minded people. As the saying goes, "it is more blessed to give than to receive," the reward we gainfrom participating in social services is a lot morethan what we give.
