Licton Springs Wetland Restoration

LictonSpringsPark is located between Ashworth Ave. N, N. 97th Street,

Densmore Ave. N. and N. 95th Court, in north Seattle near North Seattle

Community College.

Question 10. Site Description: (Size of project area, topography,

watershed positioning, level of disturbance, existing land use):

LictonSpringsPark is a 9 acre site comprised of forested wetland and

open landscaped areas including playground and comfort station. Walk-

ways over the creeks are currently being upgraded. It is heavily

impacted by Reed Canary Grass. Restoration work has been ongoing for

about 3 years.

Question 11. Project Goals & Objectives (What is to be accomplished and

why):

Goal: Implementation of the Vegetation Management Plan in Zone 1, Area

II., complete linking three previously restored sites. And help maintain the brilliant work completed by previous UWREN designer/ workers, including the day-lighting of a previously lost springhead.

Objectives:Provide invasive control techniques, creek bank restoration,

establishment of native plants including coniferous species and related

under-story, as well as “upland forest” for newly excavated “habitat

ponds” nearby. Re-introduction of Pacific Chorus Frog habitat is a main objective.

Question 12. Deliverables (What are the deliverables you expect from the

UW-REN student Group):

Design: Site assessment and planting plans, bioengineering details for

creek restoration and attendance at one meeting to present scheme to

Parks department.

Implementation: Provide labor for invasive removal, sheet mulch and

planting. Work with volunteers. Provide monitoring and maintenance plan

and follow-up for plant establishment period. Temporary Interpretive Signage explaining work is a plus.

Materials: Provide live stakes. Work with Friends of Licton Springs to

identify sources and acquire plants from various sources to carry out the

planting plan.

ProParks funding is paying for re-building of the north bridge. This construction has impacted some previous re-vegetation efforts in the area and can be addressed as part of this effort.

EarthCorps work at re-vegetation and leading volunteer work parties is ending on Dec. 1 of this year (2004.)

Parks Natural Area Crew has been helpful during the last year and hopefully we can count on them again in 2005.
