LIBRARY WEB CATALOG

1)ACCESS: At the Library Homepage click on the: "Web Catalog" button.

2)CHOOSEINTERFACE LANGUAGE by clicking on English or עברית at the top of the search screen.

There are two search options:BASIC SEARCH orADVANCED SEARCH:

3)BASIC SEARCH:

a) SELECT REQUIRED CATALOG, from the box of suggested catalogs.

The default is the "Agricultural Library" catalog.

Other options are:

  • "MainCatalog": allows a search of all the Hebrew University catalogs together,
  • "Other Indexes, Catalogs & Bibliographies": allows asearchof the union catalogs, of all Israeli academic libraries: ULI (books), and ULS (journals),or to

search each of the catalogs of Israeli academic libraries.

b) CHOOSE A FIELD TO SEARCH, AT THE "SEARCH OPTIONS" BOX:

(Before typing a query, check the examples at the right box).

In order to search Indexes, Click on:Title, or Author, or Subject, orCourse No. .

At the "SEARCH FOR" box, type an exact title (or beginning of a title), author name,

etc… Click "GO", to perform the search.

At the results list, click on required links, to see lists of catalog records, answering your query.

In order to see full records, click on records numbers.

For a more complex search, Click on: keywords, in the "Search Options"box.

The query in the "Search For" box, can be: a term, a phrase, or combination of terms by Boolean operators: "and", "or", "not".

  • Combining by: and or not :narrowsthe number of results.
  • Combining by: or:increasesthe number of results.

c) THE RESULTS LIST includes basic information about the retrieved documents.

The subheading:"Library", supplies:"Loan period"and location information.

  • Books loaned forovernight,weekend, 2, or 7 days, arelocated at the Reservedbooks area.
  • Colored tapes on the books spines, show the loan period: RED=Overnight, RED+GREEN=2 days, RED+PINK=7 days, RED+YELLOW=Weekend.
  • Books loaned for 21 days – are located at the General Reading room.

The subheading:"Library",includes as well, the book's "Shelf Number"(= the locationof books on the shelves).

  • Shelf Nos. are composed ofasubject numberand of three letters.
  • Books stand together on the shelves, arranged numericallyaccording to their subject numbers, in ascending order.
  • Within the same number, the books are arranged alphabetically, according to thethree letters.
  • Example:575.1SMI

At the subheading: "Location"click on"All copies" in order to check number ofcopies of the book, and loan period. Ifall the copies of the book are on loan (due date appears), you canrequest the book.

4)ADVANCED SEARCH:

Aguided search, which enables limiting the search to: specific document fields (titles, author names, etc..), to specific language, torange of publication years, to material type (thesis, etc..) and more.After performing the search, proceed as in "Basic Search".

5) LOAN RENEWALS:

Books are automatically renewed daily.

Note:Books will not be renewed if the user is late in returning a book, or if there are requests for thebook, or if is a reserved book with "Overnight"or "Weekend"status, or if the patron owes a fine.

An e-mail notice is sent out to the patron if a book he is holding must be returned, if a book he requested is waiting at the circulation desk or if he is late in returning library material.

6)CHECKING YOUR PLACE ON THE "HOLD REQUESTS" QUEUE:

Choose :"Your Library Card"at the top of the search screen. Type your ID (or student) number twice, click on "Sign In", click on :"Hold Requests".

Click on the book's number to see the number of requests for the book, and your place in the queue.

If a book is already waiting for you at the circulation desk,"On hold until…" appears.

7)ORDERING A BOOKloaned by others:

Perform Basic or Advanced Search, for the book.

Click on "All copies".

If allthe book copies are on loan, click on "Request".

Fill in your ID(or student) no., "Sign-In", "Order".

8) THE INTERLIBRARY LOAN SERVICE:

Books, or journal articles, that are not found in the library, can be ordered from other libraries, for a fee, via the InterLibrary Loan Service.
