Library to explore the impact of disease as part of Family History Month

During the 19th Century, an outbreak of cholera resulted in six subsequent pandemics that killed millions of people across all continents, according to the World Health Organization.This year, during Family History Month, the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County will explorecholera and otherDiseases of our Ancestors and how they impacted familiesand the records they generated.

The Library’s Genealogy and Local History Department, home to one of the nation’s top-ranked genealogy collections, will host a wide variety of programs,including introductory classes and an in-depth look at the department’s extensive print and online genealogy resources. The month-long look begins at10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Main Library.

Day with Genealogy Experts

Saturday, Oct. 3, 10 a.m. –3 p.m.

Take advantage of free one-on-one consultations provided by more than 20 experts with specializations ranging from ethnic genealogy to court records (noon–2 p.m.) and participate in guided tours of the Library resources (10 a.m. and noon).

Cholera in Cincinnati During the Nineteenth Century: A Genealogical Brick Wall

Saturday, Oct. 3, 11 a.m.
Dr. Peter Frame, physician and genealogist, will discuss the causes of cholera in the 19th century and how it affected the lives of our ancestors.

Diseases of Our Ancestors

Saturday, Oct. 3, 2 p.m.

Discover the effect of diseases, including the smallpox outbreak in Cincinnati, influenza, tuberculosis, and other common diseases eradicated today, through the eyes of genealogists.

Arepeat of the Oct. 17 Hands-on Computer Searching in the Digital Library session using the Library’s computers. Registration is required.

Genealogy Lock-In

Saturday, Oct. 31, 6:30–11:30 p.m.

Join fellow genealogists for after-hours research. During the lock-in, five optional mini-tech instructional sessions will be offered. Registration is required.
