Terrascope in the LibrariesAssignment Fall 2009

Purpose: to discover useful citations to articles on CCS; read and summarize one article; post that citation and summary to the Mission wiki, and thus build a library of unique, useful articles for the class.

1. Begin here:

A couple of options:

A. Find citations by using MIT Libraries databases

Using the page listed above, choose a database listed in the middle portion. Search the database, and choose some articles that sound interesting to you. Remember to gather the complete citation information. (Hint: email yourself the references, or export them into your team’s Refworks account)

Next, find the full text of the article, read it, and write a short summary. (It’s likely you can click to see the full text from within the database-look for a link or SFX button).Post the summary, the complete citation, and the database you used to the class wiki.

B. Find (books) and journal articles using Vera Multi-Search

Using the page listed above, go to the More Sources tab. Find the Vera Multi-Search box on the left.

Choose a category. Enter keywords into the Search box. Note the bottom box that defaults to including books in your results—uncheck it if you want articles only. When you think you have enough results, end the search and scroll through the articles. (Hint: you might want to sort by date rather than relevance. You also might have to browse a lot of hits!) Note that the database name is listed in orange under each citation.

2. Go to the Mission wiki.Insert your citation into the list of articles posted there arranged alphabetically by author last name. POST only uniquecitations—no duplicates, so work early! Post your summary under the citation you add to the list.

POST to the Mission WIKI by 5pm WednesdaySeptember 23, 2009.

Send any research questions to . Send wiki questions to your UTF.

NOTE: What you post should look like this (not in italics, but this is a complete citation)

Gibbins, Jon and Chalmers, Hannah. “Carbon Capture and storage” Energy Policy 36, no. 12 (December 2008): 4317-4322. *

This is where you write your summary. Database: Web of Science.

*If you read the article online, Include the doi like this: doi:10.1016/j.enpol.2008.09.058and then you can drop the page numbers.
