One of my favorite things to do when I wake up at 6 is to take my iPad and a cup of coffee out to our sunroom and revel in the sound of birdsong and bullfrogs before workday obligations can no longer be ignored. The question this year is how far into the fall I can prolong this idyll until I have to close the sliders and absorb the knowledge that autumn has dawned along with the day? After last winter, I’m hoping for long, drawn-out summer weather until Thanksgiving…any wagers?
August 28th will mark the final day of the Adult Summer Reading Program, when the tickets are drawn to determine the prize winners – we’ve got 72 teens and adults participating and the numbers look good. It’s with heartfelt gratitude that I thank our local businesses for providing incentives to boost the pleasure that reading brings: Coastal Living Paint and Hardware, Dodge’s Agway Farm & Garden, Drinkwater Flowers and Design, Hampton Falls Village Market, The Old Salt Tavern, Philbrick’s Fresh Market, Prim Fashion Boutique, plus Quicksilver Fine Jewelry and Gifts. We also received a framed print of New Hampshire from artist Amy Vander Els to offer as a prize, plus a couple of items that found their way into my office…winners will be selected from the tickets that weren’t picked for the original cavalcade of gifts. I do love Hampton Falls!
Annual Library Book Sale
Our Library Book Sale will take place on Saturday, Sept. 26th from 10 to 2. Donations of gently used books and dvds will be accepted through September 19th. We are looking for volunteers to help us set up and sort the books once the tables are in place on Sept. 22nd. If you’d like to assist in our preparation, please drop by or give us a call at 926-3682. NOTE: volunteers can put up to 5 books aside before the sale, which usually results in some excellent finds. Our Craft Fair will also be held at the same time (10-2), and it’s a wonderful way to support local creativity and purchase gifts for family and friends. Make and Appreciate!
Our multi-faceted and fabulous Youth Services librarian Carol will offer an “Introduction to Basket Making” workshop for adults and high school students on Wednesday, September 23rd from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. $5.00 per person will cover the cost of supplies. Please sign up in advance as space is limited. In addition, Carol will lead a beading program for adults on Friday, October 2nd from 1 to 3 pm. Please sign up in advance as space is limited and check with Carol for a list of supplies you need to purchase before the program.
Local award-winning artist and owner of Color Notes Art Gallery Barbara Busenbark will be doing two oil painting demonstrations for adults at the Library. The first demonstration will be Wednesday afternoon, September 30 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Another demonstration by Ms Busenbark will be a two weeks later, the evening of Wednesday, October 14 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Barbara’s paintings will also be on display at the Hampton Falls Library the month of October. Her description follows: “Painting in the tradition of the Impressionists my oil paintings are created almost exclusively with palette knife giving texture and vibrancy to my layers of color. In these demonstrations I will show how the colors play off of one another to create movement.” The demonstrations are free, but please call the library to reserve a space.
Fabulous Friends of the Library!
October is a block-buster month for The Friends and programs! On Tuesday, October 6th at 6:30 pm wild canid ecologist Christine Schadler present her program, “Becoming Wolf: the Eastern Coyote in New England” In the early 1990’s, Chris taught Conservation Issues, Dendrology and Wolf Ecology at UNH, receiving many teaching excellence and student recognition awards. Chris’ attention shifted to the eastern coyote when she moved to New England. She chose a farm with known coyote problems to raise sheep and train her border collies. Using sound livestock management and common sense, she avoided any predation for over two decades. Co-existence between coyote and livestock has grown an attentive audience for humane management. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will follow the presentation.
On Wednesday, October 7th, from 5 to 7 pm, The Friends and Amy Vander Els will celebrate the conclusion of the Hampton Falls Bike Challenge with refreshments and presentation of T-shirts to those who completed the challenge. We hope all participants can stop by, but you can pick up your shirts at the Library after Oct. 7th if you’re unable to attend. Congratulations to all who participated and contributed to this creative community activity!
Then, get ready for a fabulous Friday evening event! Friday, October 23rd from 7 to 8 pm to be exact. That’s when Beatles scholar Aaron Krerowicz will present “The Beatles: Band of the Sixties”. We’ll explore the music of The Beatles in this 60-minute multimedia presentation (part history and part musical analysis) spanning the full 1960's: beginning with the band's seminal visits to Hamburg, continuing through Beatlemania, and concluding with Abbey Road. The program will be supplemented with audio clips of music and excerpts from interviews with the band members. Refreshments will be served. Humanities-To-Go at the Library
At the end of October, we’re hosting a NH Humanities Council program titled “Brewing in NH: An Informal History of Beer in the Granite State from Colonial Times to the Present” with Glenn A. Knoblock on Monday, Oct. 26th at 7 pm. Glenn will explore the fascinating history of New Hampshire’s beer and ale brewing industry from when it was home- and tavern- based to today’s modern breweries and brew pubs. Rare photos and advertisements will document its changing industry. Since this program is happening on a day when the Library is closed, we’ll open the doors to the public at 6:15 pm. This event is also free and open to the public. Call 926-3682 for information.
What We’re Reading and Talking About:
Our library has lucked out on having plenty of copies for the next two book discussions, because we reserved READS-To-Go bags, which libraries borrow from each other and include 15 copies and discussion questions. No fuss, no muss, all good! The book we’re handing out and discussing on Tuesday, September 29th at 7:00 pm is The House Girl by Tara Conklin. Library Journal’s tantalizing starred review states the book is “A seamless juxtaposition of past and present, of the lives of two women, and of the redemptive nature of art and the search for truth and justice. Guaranteed to keep readers up long past their bedtimes.”
October’s selection also studies race and culture in Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The Washington Post’s review praises her efforts: “Adichie is uniquely positioned to compare racial hierarchies in the United States to social striving in her native Nigeria. She does so in this new work with a ruthless honesty about the ugly and beautiful sides of both nations.” We will share our thoughts about this title on Tuesday, October 27th at 7:00 pm. New members are always welcome!
The Library will resume regular Saturday hours (10 to 2) on Saturday, September 12th.

STORY TIMES!
Sign up for all Story Times begin Tuesday, September 8th at 10 AM. You can sign up by coming into the Library or giving us a call. Please do not e-mail us to sign up.
The Baby-Toddler Story Time is for newborns through age 2. It is held on Tuesdays from 10:30 – 11 AM. It will begin on September 15th and run through December 1st. Siblings are welcome!
Preschool Story Times will be held on Wednesdays from 1:30 – 2 PM and on Thursdays with two different sessions: The first session runs from 10:30 – 11 AM and the second runs from 1:30 – 2 PM. They begin on Wednesday, September 16th and Thursday, September 17th and will run until December 2nd and 3rd . There will be no Story Times on November 11th and November 26th.
Kindergarten Club! This is a Story Time JUST for those in Kindergarten. It will be held on Wednesdays from 3 – 3:45 PM. This program will begin on Wednesday, October 7th and run through December 2nd . It will consist of snack, stories and a craft. Space is limited. There will be no Story Time on November 11th or November 25th.
The After School Story Time for 1st to 4th graders will be held on Thursdays. The program will run from 3 – 4 PM. It will begin on September 16th and run through December 3rd. Space is limited. There will be no Story Time on November 26th.
SPECIAL PROGRAMS!

Lego Club! Tuesday, September 22nd and October 27th from 4 – 5 PM for children in Kindergarten through 4th grade The Legos will be provided (but they stay in the Library so we’ll have them for the next program!). Come ready to use your imagination! Please sign up for each program individually in advance. Please note, this is not a program that children should take the bus to the Library.
The 3rd - 4th Grade Book Discussion Group will meet Tuesday, September 15th and October 20th from 4 – 4:30 PM New members are welcome! Copies of the book are available at the Library. Please note, this is not a program that children should take the bus to the Library.
The 5th – 8th Grade Book Discussion Group welcomes new members! The dates for the up-coming meetings are Wednesday, September 16th and Wednesday, October 21st. The discussion runs from 6:30 – 7:15 PM.
Paper Airplane Program Tuesday, October 6th from 4 – 5 PM for Grades 1 – 4 Come in to make a paper airplane then join in some contests (longest flight, etc.) Please sign up in advance as space is limited. Please note, this is not a program that children should take the bus to the Library.
DONATIONS!
We always welcome donations for the many crafts we do at the library and/or snacks for our programs. Craft ideas include construction paper, glue sticks, tacky glue, fabric glue, water colors, finger paints, colored tissue paper, tube socks (new), scrap booking supplies, fabric markers, etc. If there is something you don’t see on the list that you would like to donate, please ask! Also donations for next summer’s “Treasure Chest” are welcome too, such as left over party favors, small containers of Play Dough etc. Thank you!
