Topic Two: Using keyword and phrase searches.

Search for a book.

Once you have a book or article title or keywords, you’re ready to search.

The La Trobe University home page is located at

Click Library from the left menu to access the library home page.

Suppose you want to find all library resources in the Bendigo campus library containing the word ‘periodontal’ in the title. You can do this by typing ‘periodontal’ in the search box.

We can limit the search to resources held at the Bendigo campus library by clicking the ‘In’ drop-down menu and selecting Bendigo.

By clicking the ‘By’ drop-down menu and selecting‘Title’, limits the search to resources containing the word ‘periodontal’ within the title.

Now we’re ready to search.

The search results show only resources from Bendigo campus library. To see results that include online resources and items from other La Trobe campuses, click the x next to Bendigo library.

Now we will look at how to locate online and physical resources. Clicking on a title displaysinformation about the resource you selected, including access information and current availability.

‘Browse the shelf’ lets you view resources that are next to your item on the shelf.

‘View Online’: Some resources may be available as an eBook, pdf or even video or audio recording.

‘Get It’ for physical items. If it’s available and at your campus, use the location number to find it on the shelf.

If you are logged into My Account and the item is at another campus select ‘Request’; complete details and the item will delivered to your selected campus.

Search for a journal article

Now let’s locate a journal article using phrase searching. To do this, we will use quotation marks.

Let’s say you want to find journal articles containing the exact phrase “dental radiography”. First you need to limit your results to journals only by clicking the ‘Journals’ tab.

To get results for a specific phrase, you need to put that phrase in quotation marks.

To search for articles that use “dental radiography”, as a key phrase, click the Article Keywords radio button. Currently it is set to search only journal titles.

Now we’re ready to search.

The search results display, showing only journal articles containing the phrase “dental radiography”. You can sort search results by clicking the ‘Sorted by’: drop-down field. Let’s see what’s newest by clicking ‘Relevance’ and selecting‘Date-newest’. Results will display accordingly with the newest article as listed at the top.

By searching with keywords, phrases, then limiting the search results to specific campuses or to title only, you can:

  • Find a specific book or article from a reading list, or
  • Find a range of resources related to your keyword or phrase search.

Reading lists

Your subject material on LMS and your Lecturer will often refer to reading lists. A reading list is a list of resources relevant to the subject you are studying, which you can access through the library.

There are two types of readings. Prescribed – Essential reading for your subject. Select the Reading lists option on the library home page. These resources will have restricted borrowing.

Recommended – Further readings recommended by your lecturer for a better understanding of your subject.Use the search techniques we just practised to find these resources through the library.

Some books on your reading lists are in high demand. To make sure all students have a chance to read them, access to these resources are restricted. Restricted resources can only be borrowed for a short time. Check the library record for the length of borrowing period.

Now we will locate reading list resources by clicking ‘reading lists’ under the ‘search’ bar.

You can search by subject code, subject or lecturer’s name.

When you enter a subject or code in the search box, it displays possible matches. Select the correct match from the options available.

The reading list for that subject displays. Each resource lists: the title and author, the type of resource and if it’s prescribed.

You can select a resource to learn more about it.

Information about the selected resource displays including how many copies are available, its availability in different La Trobe Campus Libraries and if it is a restricted loan.

There are many ways to borrow books, journals and other resources.

Locate on shelf: You can use the online Library Search to locate resources in your campus library, then go and find it on the shelf and borrow it.

Intercampus borrowing: Some resources might be located at another La Trobe Campus Library. You can request these items by logging into ‘My Account’ and they will be delivered to your campus, ready for you to pick up.

Document delivery: You can request a resource from any university Australia-wide and it will be delivered to your selected university library. Log into Document Delivery via Quicklinks on the library home page.

CAVAL: If you register for a CAVAL card, you can visit any Australian university library and borrow items from their shelves. Register for a CAVAL card online via the Borrowing and Ebooks on the Library home page.

Topic Three: My Account

To manage your Library account, you need to login first. Once you have logged in, you will be able to save searches, request books and view your borrowing history.

From the library home page you can click the LOGIN button on the right hand side.

Select the La Trobe University Students and Staff option.

The ‘Student and Staff Login: My account’ screen displays. Use your La Trobe University ID number as your Username and your University Password.

Your account consists of e-Shelf, Queries and My account.

e-Shelf: Your eShelf is where any of your favourite items are stored. It’s like bookmarking in a browser. When you ‘star’ an item you like in your search results list, a link to it is placed on your eShelf.

Queries: If you save a search, it will be stored here (you must be logged in to save your search). You can save search queries for later and rerun them, or set up alerts.

My Account: My account lists all resources you currently have out on loan, any fines or fees you may owe and your borrowing history. You can also see any requests you have made for items from your Campus Library or from other La Trobe Campus’. But remember, you can only request items online if you are logged in.
