Present: Gail Sacco, Matt Bollerman, Timothy McDonough, Carol Clingan, Jeffrey Cannell, and Nancy Pieri.

Excused: Mary Grace Flaherty, Kevin Gallagher, Beverly Choltco-Devlin

I. Call to Order, Approval of Agenda

President-elect Clingan called the meeting to order at 11am.

II. Approval of Minutes.

Minutes of the previous meeting were approved on a motion by J. Cannell, Second T. McDonough.

III. Financial Report

The financial report and treasurer’s report were not available due to a problem with the NYLA accounting software.

Preliminary work was done on the 2007 budget.

IV. President’s Report

The next NYLA president will be selected from a public library. C. Clingan is on the nominating committee.

V. Vice President’s Report

J. Cannell reported that conference proposals are due January 5, 2007. Program details are not necessary at this time.

VI. Committee Reports

No committee reports were available.

VII. Liaison Reports

No reports were available. The following appointments were confirmed.

Legislative Committee. T. Burke will be the PLS representative.

Library District Task Force. J. Cannell will continue on this committee.

Membership. B. Choltco-Devlin will be the PLS representative.

Continuing Education. Bob Devino has been attending the NYLA CE meetings as the PLS representative.

VIII. Spring Conference 2007

Wither our spring conference? Conflicts with the usual May date were discussed as well as possible venues and topics. C. Clingan will check with MG Flaherty.

IX. NYLA Conference

Author! Author! In the future, the PLS Past President will be responsible for this event. In 2007, C. Clingan will work alongside B. Devino.

Program possibilities for 2007:

1. Equal Health Access

2. Community Collaboration

3. Buildings: either Renovating an historic site or Green buildings

4. Table Talks—broaden to include trustees, administrators, small, rural libraries

5. Poetry in Libraries/Community Reads—Lessons Learned. Connecting Communities with Literature

6. Volunteers—recruiting, training, retaining

7. Public Speaking

8. Rechartering—the morning after

9. Bookmobiles

J. Cannell will reach out to LAMS and NYSALB as possible partners for some of these program topics.

Conference programs in general. A script will be provided to presenters inviting attendees who enjoyed the program to join PLS to help plan future programs.

When considering conference programs, ask: who will this program benefit? PLS needs to stay focused on its membership and plan programs that have wide appeal for all types and sizes of public libraries.

X. Old Business

Past president, G. Sacco reported on Deborah Anderson’s IMLS grant project. It was agreed to submit her report for publication in JLAMS. Our newsletter, Synergy, will have an overview of the report with a link to the full document.

XI. New Business

G. Sacco expressed concern over whether DLD will be able to replace their staff member who worked with youth services. J. Cannell will discuss with T. Burke for the Legislative Committee to consider.
