The goal of this assignment is to compile a “personal inventory” of the information you will need
for your job search and to encourage you to identify your career interests and work preferences.
You have done a variety of interesting things in your life. Whether in the workplace, at home, as a volunteer or in school, each experience has contributed to your talents.Use this exercise to help you document your accomplishments, identify your career goals and help you prepare for a job in the library field.
Part I: Personal Inventory(20 points)
Your personal profile.Compile a list of the following information you will need for your job search.
This list will help you to prepare or enhance your resume, help you with job applications and for interview preparation.
A) List and describe the following and also consider how these skills, interests and abilities
can relate to work in libraries:(10 points)
- Activities: list school and community activities you've participated in
- Aptitudes: think about your natural abilities
- Achievements, awards and honors: list personal achievements.
List awards received (school, jobs, activities, volunteer work) - Interests: think about your vocational and personal interests
- Personal strengths: think about your best characteristics or qualities.
- Projects:give details about projects you've been involved in, including what you've researched,
planned, built, or supervised on or off the job. - Skills and talents: think about what you're good at and how you've demonstratedthese abilities.

B)Summarize the following (10 points):
- Work history/Job experiences: List dates of employment as well as a job description and list of responsibilities. Also describe what you've learned from past jobs. (5 points)
- What do you want potential employers to know about you? Why should they hire you? Highlight your aptitudes, personal strengths, skills and talents most desirable by employers. (5 points)
Part II: Career goals and job ‘fit’(i.e. What aspects of library work appeal to you?)(10 points)
- Identify your personal area(s) of interest in libraries and describe what attracts you to that aspect of the library field. (e.g. Acquisitions, Cataloging, Public Services), library services of interest (e.g. Web development, Community Outreach, Literacy programs, Children’s Services,
etc.), types of libraries (e.g. public, academic, special) - What are the important elements of your “ideal work environment”? Based on your library visits, reading and guest speakers, consider working conditions, level of service (staffing volume of patrons, age and types of patrons, facility, noise level, allocation of space, budget house of service/work hours.
