Dear Colleague,

Lancashire One to One Tuition; Update for 2010-11

·  Places for Lancashire double to 13,750 for 2010-2011

Schools have:-

·  Primary minimum 4, maximum 36

·  Secondary minimum 30 maximum 280

·  Special to be negotiated with Head Teachers, likely to remain around the same or slight increase.

·  Pupil Guarantees disappeared under the arrangements for dissolution of Parliament so no carrot for schools to continue 1-2-1 after august 2011.

·  Tutor pay increases to £25.56 per hour and schools funded for this

We are aware that the take up of external tutors, trained or otherwise has been disappointing for those of you hoping to engage in tuition that are not based in a school. Schools have preferred to use their own or known staff inside the school day despite all our efforts to encourage them to consider alternatives. Understandably, their concerns have been the safety of the children and the tutor and the expense of buying the new enhanced CRB and the registration for the GTC necessary to allow you to tutor.

We have been giving a lot of thought to this. We know that many schools will be unable to continue this model due to the pressure on their own staff and on finding places to tutor in. We have provided Tuition Leads with case studies outlining alternative models of delivery and, we have engaged with all the major agencies working in Lancashire schools to ensure a quality trained workforce to support the massive increase in tutoring.

The agencies have either been trained by us or had their own training scrutinised by us and have agreed to engage with CPD through tutor network sessions or the moodle. Several of them are very anxious to recruit tutors to help cope with the coming increase in tuition places and have asked that we flag this up to you as a possible way of securing a route into tutoring, without the on costs and safeguarding issues that currently bug schools. A list of the agencies and their websites follow and if this is something you are interested in we would encourage you to contact these agencies to see if you are able to be recruited for 1-2-1 tutoring as soon as possible.

Agencies we have been working with are:

Next year we will, as a team, be far more concerned with the quality of tuition delivery, concentrating on Quality Assuring the tuition session and offering support via the tutor network sessions, much focused face to face tutor CPD and the continuing moodle development to tutors to ensure quality delivery to students and schools.

1. We will continue the tutor networking sessions as twilight with a formal generic input, but more time to share resources and network or have an individual session with a team member.

2. We will expand the focused face to face sessions with an afternoon and a twilight session with moodle training being available regularly throughout the year and in North, Preston and East Lancs. venues. We will plan the focused sessions around what you say you need as well as patterns of need emerging from the QA visits.

Important information about the moodle.

If you are on the TDA database you have automatically been logged onto our moodle and received your user name and password in January 2010. Please do not ask to be logged on again if you are on this database; we have been inundated by requests for access by people who are already registered.

The requests to log you on are positive and we are glad you are showing the interest BUT it is extremely time consuming. We have therefore decided to add to the list and arrange moodle access at specific time in an effort to manage our workload better.

So, for any new request for moodle access please send your email address, first and surname and postcode to Katy at the team website address above (subject line: moodle access request) and this will be next updated at the beginning of September.

We are also dealing with two major complaints about the moodle:

1.  Those of you who have completed the face to face training need to know the access code for the advanced course and

2.  Those of you who have completed the moodle training online need to be issued with a certificate.

We are dealing with this, but it is unlikely to be sorted out before July as currently the new allocations to schools are taking time and a half! I can only apologise for any inconvenience, and ask that you bear with us.

I want to thank you very much for all the commitment and patience you have shown this first year. I am very sorry we have not been able to help more of you find work but have every hope that we will be able to help you in future as a result of the agency approach. We do hope to continue seeing as many of you as possible at the tutor training sessions.

Yours sincerely

Hilary King
