[1]LEWIS SKI CLUB NEWSLETTER
______
Next Meeting: December 4th @ BW3’s Rocky River December, 2001
OVER 350 NEW OPENINGS ANNOUNCED
APPLICATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR WORLWIDE LOCATIONS
With this newsletter, the NASA Lewis Ski Club is announcing over 350 new openings, and applications are being accepted immediately. Openings in western New York and western Pennsylvania will require travel by bus. Openings in the western U.S. and Europe will require air travel. To apply, applicants must have a current membership in The Club, complete and submit the appropriate section of the announcement and that location’s unique release form, and include payment by check of the specified amount for the selected location(s). Most of these openings are designed for persons interested in sliding downhill on parallel narrow planks or a single wider one, but over 100 openings are available for persons who prefer propelling themselves along varied terrain on particularly skinny parallel planks. Specifics about each of these openings are included later in this issue, with quick summaries included in the respective sections on Alpine and Nordic activities. Contact persons are also identified for each location if further information is desired. The specific dates, locations, and costs vary considerably, so applicants are encouraged to thoroughly review all information before deciding which openings to apply for. Potential applicants are also encouraged to make early decisions, as openings are generally filled on a first-come, first-served basis and there are firm limits (and no quotas) for each location.
UPCOMING MEETINGS
On Tuesday, December 4th, the monthly general club meeting will again be held at BW3’s in Rocky River, at 20412 Center Ridge River (across from and east of Westgate Mall). The arrangement worked well last month, so we will again purchase assorted appetizers while you purchase your own drink(s). Social hour will begin at 5:00pm, followed by the business portion beginning at about 6:00pm. Gordon Geiger from “Geiger’s Clothing and Sports” of Lakewood will be there to talk about his store’s ski equipment and service, and to raffle off (read: free!) a few nice prizes to those in attendance.
Our monthly board meeting will be on Thursday, December 20th, 12:00 noon – 1:00 pm, bldg 500, room 3109. All activity coordinators are encouraged to attend.
DOWNHILL “DOPE”
Fellow Alpine enthusiasts:
I do not have much to say this time other then check out all the trip flyers. We finally have the flyers for 5 great day trips and one weekend trip. You have to checkout these flyers and be ready to sign up. These trips are first come first serve. All these trips include round trip bus transportation and group rate on the lift tickets. One trip even included lunch as part of their package. The weekend trip has a price that is hard to beat. For those who are looking for a longer trip, do not forget about the weeklong trips.
I look forward to seeing you on the slopes.
(Al Linne)
NOTE: For the first time, this year club membership is required for all trip participants.

Banff Update: We have ten people signed up for the March 9-16 Banff trip. The snow conditions are great. This weekend, Lake Louise is holding a World Cup Women’s GS & Downhill race and Sunshine Village has over 80% of their trails opened. Just recently, there have been some web-based discount airfares, which, if still available, can reduce the total trip price by $85-$90. But you will need to make your plans soon because after Friday, December 7, I will be canceling any excess flight reservations and I can't guarantee that spots would still be available. If you still thinking about joining us, give me a call and we can check for the latest airfares.

NORDIC “SKINNY”
The flyer for the one-day bus trip up to the Art Roscoe ski area is included in this newsletter! Please check it out and sign up early. January 12th is closer than you think and Roger is doing a great job arranging a fun day for all. Different this year is the group dinner included with the trip. The dinner selections are varied and look quite yummy. It’ll also be nice to extend the fun through dinner by eating all together and regaling each other with tales of trails from our past.
Please note one addition to the schedule and that is a telemark skiing clinic on January 13th. It will be held locally and is sponsored by Newman Outfitters. I’ll have more details by the next club meeting, just wanted you all to start saving the day! The Poker Run signup will also be out soon -- next newsletter, definitely. If you need to sign up before that, just give me a call!
Many of our cross-country outings are scheduled for Lake County’s Chapin Forest. Directions to get there are:

Art Roscoe Outing (Another Nordic Activity you won’t want to miss…)
Once again we will be traveling to Southwestern New York’s Allegany State Park for some of the best Nordic ski trails within a single day bus trip. We will even pick you up at your home (provided you live either at NASA or in the northwest corner of the parking lot in front of Home Depot by Dennys on Wilson Mills Road). This would be a great opportunity to get some more training in for the Nordic Flurry.
Over twenty-five miles of groomed tracks make up the Art Roscoe Ski Center loop system. Most of the loops allow you to go either clockwise or counterclockwise, which in reality, gives it a completely different experience as the awesome view and varied terrain are reversed, doubling the skiable miles. The trails are coded loops, identifying their level of difficulty by the green circle, blue square and black diamond. The natural layout of the terrain and the direction of travel also alter the degree of difficulty. There are plenty of miles of trails for every level of skier ability. I have yet to hear some one say they didn’t get enough skiing in.
In the past this trip has been successful due to Nordic Enthusiasts and first time cross country skiers sharing the bus, making it possible to ski to your heart’s content, enjoy après ski socializing and get relatively close to home before needing to be energized enough for the final leg of the day, for a considerably low cost. Beginners are welcome to start their day out with a brief lesson, more or less teaching the basics on the stride, how to turn, when to sit, etc. In the past, that has been well appreciated and the feedback confers that this lesson had made the day even better for the beginners. Rental equipment is available for anyone needing it.
Once again, we are counting on you to sign up early to create the snow karma needed for this type of adventure. An adventure into an area that not only relies on, but gets natural snowfall in the amounts that fosters snowy winter festivities. The snow mobile trails are quite extensive in the park, but high on the biggest mountain in the park, is the Art Roscoe trail network, legally outside the range of the snowmobiles. You can even ski to Bova, a remnant of an alpine ski area. The lift towers are still visible and the slope is a hit with snow sled riders and snow boarders who don’t mind the climb. With the groomed trails exclusively for the skinny skis, it’s not recommended to ski Bova, but it is cool to check out. They have already received snow on top the mountain where the trails exist, and this second Saturday in January (the 12th) is in the prime snow season. (In the unlikely event that the weather turns south and the trails loose their snow, we will cancel with a full refund).
In addition to the standard bus breakfast that available on all the Lewis Ski Club bus trips, we will also provide a hot lunch at the warming hut (at your schedule) and a group banquet dinner in Olean (you chose your entrée).
Now you are probably wondering what to bring. A rule of thumb for Nordic skiing is to dress in layers so you will have the ability to keep your body temperature comfortable. The layer next to your ski should be a non-cotton layer that will wick your moisture away from you, to keep the chill off. Figure the trail loops could take a hour or two, so bring a small day pack to carry your extra layers and some water. If you are renting skis, good non-cotton socks are a necessity. If your feet are prone to blisters, pad the areas with moleskin or some blister preventative device. Bring your friends, provided they are Lewis Ski Club members (or willing to join) and they made the bus list cut as seats are limited. Most important, bring your smile, as you are in for a fun day.
How’s it sound so far? Interested? This is the month to sign up. If you wait too long, this trip will no longer be available. Don’t wait until the last minute because that is not the way it works. There is the bus commitment, food to organize, beer and/or wine to purchase, and an early bird discount if you sign up by January 7th. It would be very helpful if you signed up before the holidays so I don’t have quite the burden of everyone signing up the week of the trip, besides there are limited seats and you know you want to go…
See the attached flyer for more info or call me at my house (216-741-3137).
