Role

Gilbarco Veeder-Root is seeking one apprentice to train to become a Service Engineer. You will be working with a Service Engineer to learn the role. Covering a specific geographical area, you will assist with the diagnosis of faults on all aspects of fuel dispensing equipment including the pumps, gauges and point of sale equipment and performing preventative maintenance where possible (changing hose, belts, etc).

Training Provided

The successful applicant will undertake an Advanced Level Engineering Maintenance Apprenticeship (Level 3). The programme will take 3 years to complete however your training will continue in the company for an additional 2 years. During the apprenticeship, you will attend Prospects College, Basildon for 5-days per week for the first year of the apprenticeship and then 1-day per week from the second year onwards. During college breaks in the first year, you will be required to attend the Gilbarco premises in Basildon.

Working Hours

College hours: 8.30am-4.30pm

Employer hours: 7.30am – 4.30pm

If you are offered a permanent position at the end of the apprenticeship, , you will be required to work some nights, Bank Holidays and Christmas as the nature of the role requires 24-hour cover.

Your first year is in college full-time, holidays within the first year of your apprenticeship must be taken within college breaks.

Salary

£3.65 per hour to start, with 6-monthly increases giving you a salary of £24,960 (basic pay) per annum by the end of Year 5.

Additional pay: If you are offered a permanent position at the end of the apprenticeship, travel time paid after first ½ hour of travel, overtime payments for any additional hours including travel, payments for being on-call, double time plus time off in lieu for actually going out on-call.

Qualifications required

A*-C grades in Maths, English and Science

Experience Required

No previous engineering experience essential though it may be useful.

Personal Qualities

You must be self-motivated with a methodical approach as well as able to work in a small team. You will need good communication skills and be inquisitive and investigative by nature.

Applicants must be 17/18 year olds so that they are 21 by the time they complete their apprenticeship and must be able to drive on completion of the apprenticeship.

Selection Process

If you meet the criteria then you will be invited to attend an initial interview at Prospects College. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to attend an Assessment Day at Prospects College on 28.01.14 to undertake practical and team tasks. In addition to college staff, Gilbarco representatives will be present to shortlist for company interviews.
