CURRENT EVENTS: Surprise, surprise—we got in a whole week of school! At specials’ time today, the children did jumping activities in the gym to culminate our Jump Rope for Heart fund raiser. Thanks so much for the support with our Spirit Week and our fund raiser!!!Plus, many students spent their AR book bucks at the library, today. For our Cub Cash Bash, the children watched, “Horton Hears a Who!” I look forward to iscussing your child’s progress with you on Tuesday, March 1st.

Language Arts: This week we have learned about acrostic poems. Together we read several acrostic poems written by children and in books. Then, they have worked on writing an acrostic poem using their names to write about themselves.

Math: Wrapping up our study of patterns, learning about ordinal number words, increasing and decreasing number patterns, and using the ordinal number symbols to mark position has been our focus this week. Your child needs to know the ordinal numbers 1st thru the 10th symbols and words, which is a SOL from Kindergarten that we cover again because many need a refresher course. Plus, our students who have moved into Virginia, may not have covered this material previously.

Social Studies: The children completed making a legend for their U.S.A. maps, located lakes and drew mountains that are found in our country. We found Virginia and discussed what states were our neighbors. In our Scholastic News: “Making Crayons” the children learned about how crayons are produced for us to buy. Important economic terms that were addressed were producers (those who make the goods) and consumers (those who buy and use the goods).
