Letter and Sound of the Week:Ss – Sammie Seal

Themes of the Week: Colors All Around

Word of the Week: see

Dear Kindergarten Families:

It was nice to see you all at Back to School Night last week. Thanks to all for volunteering your time to help, especially our Room Parents, Mrs. Bunch and Mrs. Obermok. Your lovely children are doing very well learning new routines. While we learn about Constitution Day (9/17), we will review our school rules and sign our class mission statement! They will sign a document that says they will try their best to respectful, responsible and safe.

Language Arts : We enjoyed many books about school. We are getting to know our classmates and their names. This week begins our new unit “Colors All Around.” We will explore the letter “Ss” and the sight word “see.”

They enjoyed decorating their Booklet Boxes, and I thank you for sending in boxes and stickers. The box was created to store the half-sheet copied booklets I send home and sight words you might want to put on index cards. They can practice reading these booklets and words, and the box fits nicely under a bed or in a closet. (And it’s all recyclable!)

In our Making Meaning program, I read a book twice in each week, and have lessons that include comprehension, behavior, and group discussions. This program also includes vocabulary words we discuss. I call them “juicy” words. Last week’s words: companion, creature, explore, imitate from “My Frieinds” by Taro Gomi. This week’s words: generous, nuisance, energetic, exhausted from “If You Give a Mouse A Cookie” by Laura Numeroff.

Math: We are counting our days of school and learning to recognize and write the numbers to 10. We place a popsicle stick in a pocket each day, and today we’ll watch how ten sticks bundled make a group of 10, and we’ll show one group of ten and zero ones or 10 (beginning of place value!).

Science: We begin our Properties Unit this week as we use our five senses to describe different tangible objects. Kindergartenersusually love science, because they get to work with their hands and touch everything! These units allow children to explore the world around them, ask questions, and find out answers on their own. I love science!
