An invitation to take part in the LETCHWORTH FESTIVAL

CHILDREN'S ART COMPETITION 2016

The Letchworth Festival invites you to take part in the 2016 'Children's Art Competition'. This year’s Competition is sponsored by Letchworth Sustainability Forum, with support from Affinity Water. It includes all children and children's groups in Letchworth. We will accept as many entries from each children's group or school as you wish to submit, although we will not be able to accept more than one entry per child. This year’s theme for the Competition is water and we want to give you the opportunity to celebrate the availability of clean water for us in Letchworth. In celebrating we are also appreciating that water is a precious resource locally and globally and recognising it should be conserved. So we are asking you to use a “Happy Water Day” as the inspiration for the artwork.

What is the Letchworth Festival Children's Art Competition 2016?

It is a competition open to all children aged 4 to 18 years of age in Letchworth Garden City.

A selection of the pictures submitted to the competition will be publicly displayed during the Festival fortnight (June 11th - 26th 2015), and will also be displayed on the festival website at

Prizes will be awarded for the best picture in a series of age categories (these will be communicated closer to the festival fortnight). We intend to involve the people of Letchworth by voting for their favourite pictures.

The prizes will be presented in a special ceremony at the end of the Festival fortnight.

How does my organisation take part ?

If your children's group or school wish to take part, please confirm by emailing competition organiser, Hilary Kemp, as soon as possible - at latest by the end of March (i.e. by the Easter holiday)

Your children will need to have created their pictures by mid May if they are going to be entered in to the competition.

There is no limit on the number of entries that can be submitted by each children's group/ school, but they will all need to be ready to submit to the competition organiser by Friday May 13th.

The organiser will arrange collection of the entries from each children's group or school.

2. Medium - The pictures can be drawn or painted using materials chosen by the school (pencils, paints, etc).

Struggling to come up with a creative idea on the theme of

'My Happy Water Day’?

Things we can do with water:

Leisure time

- swimming in the outdoor pool or at the Leisure Centre

- sailing a toy boat on the pond or even taking a ride in a real one

- watching or even splashing through the fountains and the paddling pool

- playing in the rain, jumping into puddles

- getting muddy playing football or rugby!

Keeping clean and germ free

- having a bath or shower

- washing clothes and bedding

- keeping other things clean (the house, the car, your bike and toys)

- how does a window cleaner keep people’s windows nice and clean?

Being able to enjoy nature and the environment

- green grass to sit on, read a book, sunbathe, enjoy a picnic or play football

- lovely flowers and plants all around us

- all the trees we have in Letchworth

- remember that wild animals need water too (squirrels, deer, birds, bats and owls too)

- places you enjoy exploring: streams, ponds, trees (especially ones that are good to climb)

In the garden

- growing fruit and vegetables in the garden

- keeping the garden nice to enjoy playing outside in

- outside, year round colour and lots of plants and flowers to cheer us up

- rain on the windows when we look out

- a nice water feature or even a fish pond,

a bird bath …

Food and drink

- keeping healthy with a refreshing glass of water, clean and instantly available at the turn of a tap!

- what about that lovely bowl of hot pasta, pie chips and gravy or even cooking vegetables

- salad in the summer, making sure you don’t find a bug on your lettuce!

- keeping cool and enjoying ice lollies and ice cubes

Pets need water too

- dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, budgies and snakes all need fresh water to drink

- and occasionally a bath too…

- pets also like to have fun in water, splashing about and swimming

.... don't feel you have to use any of these suggestions! Chose whatever makes yours a Happy Water Day!
