Lesson title How to talk about Chinese Zodiacs
Step 1—Desired ResultsI. Students can learn the words related Chinese zodiacs in Chinese:
什么(what)、生肖(zodiac)、十二(twelve)、属相(zodiac)、 动物(animal)、鼠(rat)、牛(ox)、虎(tiger)、兔(rabbit)、龙(dragon) 蛇(snake)、马(horse)、羊(sheep)、猴(monkey)、鸡(rooster)、狗(dog)、猪(pig) in 10 minutes.
II. Students can use and understand these words in the following contexts:
1、—你的属相是什么?(What’s your zodiac?)
—我属鸡。你呢?(My zodiac is rooster. What about you?)
—我属狗。(Mine is dog.)
2、—你爸爸的属相是什么?(What’s your dad’s zodiac?)
—我爸爸属虎。(My dad’s zodiac is tiger.)
3、—你妈妈的属相是什么?(What’s your mom’s zodiac?)
—我妈妈属马。(My mom’s zodiac is horse.)
Step 2—Assessment Evidence
- Pair work: Students together with their partners can ask and answer the following questions: 1. What animals are Chinese zodiacs? 2. What’s your zodiac? 3. What’s your _____’s zodiac?
- Inside and Outside Circle: Students can be divided in to two groups and form two circles. The students in the inside circle ask the persons in the outside circle questions about Chinese zodiacs and the outsiders answer them. When the teacher asks the outsiders move to their left for one step, they can have a new partner to form a new dialogue.
- Presentation: Teacher will invite pairs of students to come to the front of the classroom facing the teaching poster. Students present their dialogues about languages in front of the class.
Step 3—Learning Plan
I. Warming up:
Greetings: 你好! 你好吗?我很好。
II. Lead-in:
Review the sentences we have learned in the past weeks fast.
Teacher says some Chinese words of zodiac animals while showing some animal pictures to the students and points at these words at the same time, letting the students guess what these Chinese words mean.
III. Presentation:
Teach the students how to pronounce these animal words in Chinese.

Introduce some sentence patterns to express how to talk about languages.
1、—你的属相是什么?(What’s your zodiac?)
—我属鸡。你呢?(My zodiac is rooster. What about you?)
—我属狗。(Mine is dog.)
2、—你爸爸的属相是什么?(What’s your dad’s zodiac?)
—我爸爸属虎。(My dad’s zodiac is tiger.)
3、—你妈妈的属相是什么?(What’s your mom’s zodiac?)
—我妈妈属马。(My mom’s zodiac is horse.)
IV. Pair work:
Practice in pairs. Students in each group will practice how to talk about zodiacs with their partners. Teachers will join the students to help them and make sure every student can speak out these sentence patterns. And the students are encouraged to figure out the zodiac animals of their families and make more dialogues.
V. Inside and Outside Circle by using the above sentence patterns:
The teacher shows how to make a dialogue with a fast learner and uses the sentences listed above and the previous dialogue learned before so as to help students to understand and use these sentences better.
VI. Presentation
The teacher invites some volunteers to present their dialogues about languages in front of the class.
