Timing / Teaching and Learning

All students must; Sing the lyrics and play in time and be part of an ensemble or work individually on an arrangement. Understand the definitions on the ‘trans umbrella’.
Most students should; Identify some of the elements of disco and include them in their arrangement
Some students could; Sing the lyrics and play in time and be part of an ensemble or work individually on an arrangement. Compose using structure – Intro, section A, B and breakdown, outro. Understand the definitions on the ‘trans umbrella’.
Extend / Reinforce the Learning:
Homework:
Write the homework on the board and ensure students have written it in their planners. / 3mins / All students write the homework and keywords in their planners
  • Using logic or a live instrument complete my arrangement of ‘I will Survive’
  • Keywords – 4 on the floor, syncopation, walking bassline, riff

Begin the Learning - Starter: Present new information using Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic methods. / 15mins / Activity 1: Play video of the song ‘I Will Survive’ from Priscilla Queen of the Desert:

Activity 2: Ask students to discuss in pairs who they think is performing the song.
Activity 3: Using PowerPoint discuss definitions of ‘Trans’
Activity 4: Hand out lyric and chord sheet to all students – replay video and follow chord sequence
Continue the Learning - Activities: This is the main part of the lesson. Provide a variety of challenging, differentiated VAK tasks / activities, meeting the needs of all students and all abilities.

New activity / Apply / Review / 30mins / Using the worksheet provided – worksheet 1:
  • Students will sing along to original track
  • Identify the elements of disco – (on the worksheet)
  • Teacher demonstrates on a classroom instrument how to play the chord sequence using the cycle of 5ths from Am
  • Teacher demonstrates on a classroom instrument how to play the ‘Riff’
  • Teacher to allocates instrument for each student or a computer to use a sequencing program.
Student practical arrangement time: 25 mins
  • Task 1 – Input the rhythm using the drum pattern on the worksheet
  • Task 2 – Input a walking bassline
  • Task 3 – Input a syncopated chord sequence
  • Task 4 – Input a riff using brass or string sound
  • Task 5 – structure your arrangement using intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, improvisation, etc….

Supporting / Developing the Learning – Differentiation:
Where appropriate, identify students and the methods of support and extension to be used. Include support staff meeting notes. / Students / Target groups likely to need support::
Students needing support will utilise their LSA.
Weaker students will work with more able students in a group.
Teacher to support and set shorter tasks / Students likely to need extension work:
Students needing extension work will learn the chords, riff and rhythm and will go on to compose their own improvisation to add into the finished performance.
Celebrating the Learning – Plenary: Students demonstrate in some way what they have learned. Recognition of progress. Refer back to Learning Objectives. / 10 mins / Students celebrate their learning by playing back their arrangements. Other students are asked to identify the elements of disco they can hear.
Students verbally assess each other’s arrangements.
Management of Resources
Identify which resources are to be used and how. Include the use of new technology and the use of other supporting adults. /
  • IWB to play YouTube clip
  • A variety of classroom instruments that includes piano, keyboard, guitar, bass guitar, xylophone, percussion and drum kit
