Lesson Plans- On-Level Math

Fall 2017

DATE: 9/5 – 9/8

Monday

No School!

Tuesday

Objective: I will be able to subtract integers using a number line.

Activity:

  • Warm-Up: Commutative Property application and definition
  • How can you rearrange the numbers so it’s easier to solve the expressions mentally?
  • Subtracting Integers with Number Lines- students model how to subtract integers using the number lines provided
  • What patterns do you notice?
  • Subtracting Integers Matching Activity- students match up the algorithm to the corresponding number line model

Closing Product: We will be able to write and solve a word problem for the expression -4 – 10 for the ticket out.

Homework: Skills Sheet #2 due Thursday, Sept. 7

Materials Needed: subtracting integers with number lines hand out, matching activity, index cards

Wednesday

Objective: I will be able to subtract integers without models.

Activity:

  • Warm-Up: Complete Properties of Operations Chart with identity property and associative for addition.
  • Game- students practice subtracting integers using the following website

Closing Product: We will be able to get a score of 30 or higher on the fruit shoot game.

Homework: Skills Sheet #2 due Thursday, Sept. 7

Materials Needed: butcher paper, chrome books

Thursday

Objective: I will be able to add and subtract integers without using models.

Activity:

  • Warm-Up: Multiplication Practice
  • Grade homework- Skills Sheet #2
  • White Board Practice and ppt- student practice both addition and subtraction problems involving integers as a whole group
  • Students practice addition and subtraction problems with their partners and using their chrome books
  • Integer Roll game- students roll a colored or white dice to get their integer. Then they decide if they are going to add or subtract. When they receive a number that is on the game board they cover up that square. The first person with 5 in a row is the winner.

Closing Product: We will be able to solve 4 out 5 problems correctly on the ticket out.

Homework: none

Materials Needed: dice, game boards, integer roll game sheet, dry erase boards, expos, chrome book

Friday

Objective: I will be able to add and subtract integers with and without models. I will be able to compare and order integers with and without a number line. I will be able to identify integers, their opposites, and find the absolute value. I will be able to use Venn diagrams to organize numbers.

Activity:

  • Review Packet- students work independently on their reviews
  • The whole class goes over several of the more commonly misunderstood problems on the review packet.

Closing Product: We will have completed at least 22 questions on the review packet before leaving.

Homework: Complete review packet

Materials Needed: review packet
